Recap / What If Professor X Of The X Men Had Become The Juggernaut

Go To

The Juggernaut is a famous Marvel villain known for being unstoppable and his close connection to Professor X; he's Charles' stepbrother, Cain Marko. They were even together at the point where Cain touched the Gem of Cyttorak. So, what if their positions were flipped, and Charles was just a little bit closer to the doom rock? What if Charles Xavier had touched the Gem of Cyttorak and become the Juggernaut?

As one might expect, it doesn't end well. X-Juggernaut grows significantly more misanthropic by being buried in the cave where the gem was (while Cain escapes), and on the outside, there are no X-Men to take out Magneto when he first showed up terrorizing New York and ranting about mutant superiority, so the Fantastic Four do the job instead. This has severe social consequences, as without the X-Men around as an example of mutant heroism, mutants are indelibly linked in the minds of normal humans to Magneto's 'Hitler Recolored' image. You think Fantastic Racism is bad in the 616 verse? Yeah, you haven't seen anything yet.

This eventually leads to an out-and-out superpowered race war, and X-Juggernaut emerges in the middle of it. He promptly takes steps to eliminate non-mutant heroes so to let the mutants win; he psychically tips Iron Man back into alcoholism, re-freezes Captain America, depowers the Fantastic Four, and threatens to tell Aunt May about Spider-Man (which works because May is so old, Peter worries that the shock of realizing he's Spider-Man will outright kill her) to blackmail him into standing down.

With all of Earth's mightiest heroes down for the count, X-Juggernaut creates a world where mutants rule and humans are oppressed, with New York being a human slum. X-Juggernaut is eventually defeated when the X-men's heroic natures shine through and, led by Cyclops, they lure him to Magneto's asteroid base and toss him out an airlock, before returning to Earth to rebuild.

The Watcher: Nothing can stop the Juggernaut. And now... nothing ever will.

What If Professor X Became the Troper?

  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Trapped for decades on his own, Xavier basically abandons his old dream of peaceful coexistence in favour of putting the mutants in power.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Earth is wrecked by a superpowered race war, most non-mutant heroes are indisposed... but the X-Men have managed to come together, and with Xavier-Juggernaut out of the way, they can begin rebuilding.
  • Fate Worse than Death: The Juggernaut is immortal and unstoppable... but he is left shooting through space, unable to reach Earth again.
  • It's All About Me: X-Juggernaut basically gets rid of every non-mutant hero so that he can focus on putting mutants in power.
  • Thrown Out the Airlock: The ultimate fate of X-Juggernaut.
