Recap / WITCH Animated S 1 E 26

Go To

With Elyon's coronation ceremony only hours away, the Guardians and Caleb have to figure out a way to get the rebel forces across the Meridian Plains without being seen by Phobos's forces. Luckily, the plan is made to have the rebels travel from their camp to Earth through one portal, then through another portal back to Meridian right underneath the castle itself, thus avoiding alerting Phobos to their attack until they've already infiltrated the castle itself.

In the castle, Elyon is loving just how much stronger her powers are getting as she's nearly at the zenith of her magical abilities, but Phobos and Cedric keep her oblivious to the truth until the time is right to spring their lie.

After Cornelia has a vision of Elyon in trouble, the decision is made to launch the attack. After the rebels cross over to Earth and back to Meridian, they soon find they have additional help from members of Phobos's own guard, led by Tynar, who was able to convince many of them to defect after seeing the truth that Earth was not as bad as Phobos first told them. With the added support from Tynar and the defected guards, the rebels and Guardians launch their attack.

Meanwhile, Elyon goes to check out her throne for the coronation, but it is then that Phobos and Cedric expose their lie to her, as Elyon is restrained to her throne, Cedric assumes his snake beast form, and when Elyon tries asking Miranda for help, she too reveals her true, spider-like form to Elyon, causing her to scream in terror. The ceremony to transfer Elyon's power to Phobos soon begins, but is interrupted when word of the joint rebel/Guardian/defector attack reaches Phobos and Cedric. Livid, Phobos goes to deal with them himself after sending Cedric earlier to confront them, leaving Elyon alone in the room.

Initially, the attack makes considerable progress, but once Cedric appears, he is held at bay by Blunk, but once Phobos appears, all hell breaks loose as he uses what power he was able to siphon from Elyon to overpower his enemies, while also punishing Cedric for his repeated failures. While Will, Irma, Taranee, and Hay Lin struggle to fight Phobos, Cornelia infiltrates the throne room to rescue Elyon, who apologizes profusely for everything she did against the Guardians because of Phobos's deception, but Cornelia doesn't hold it against her as she frees Elyon, deals with the Lurdens guarding the doors, and the reunited friends head off to help the others.

Back with the other Guardians and Phobos, he soon manages to overpower them, before making his move to claim the Heart of Kandrakar from Will. As she struggles to fight his attempts to take the Heart, Matt tries to intervene on Will's behalf, only to be repulsed, which gives Will the additional willpower to fight Phobos off, until just as Phobos is about to claim the Heart and ultimate victory, the Heart fires a beam off to the side, where Elyon and Cornelia have appeared. The Heart was transferring Elyon's stolen power back to her. With Elyon and the Guardians united against him, Phobos is forced to give up on claiming the Heart now that Elyon and the Guardians were confronting him together, and in a desperate gamble to save his own skin, transforms into a four-headed dragon, in which the dragon heads are those of the Emperor's dragons from the ancient lore regarding the Guardians' elemental powers. However, Phobos's last card to use against the Guardians and Elyon is useless, as Hay Lin clearly states that using the Emperor's dragons against the Guardians is futile as the dragons were good, not evil.

Once Phobos is returned to his normal appearance, the Guardians and Elyon then trap him in an energy field, even as he shouts in defiance that this can't be how he is defeated, much to Caleb's amusement as he tends to Matt. After a final recap of everything he had done to sow seeds of mistrust and hostility against the Guardians in her, Elyon scornfully tells Phobos goodbye, saying with tears in her eyes that he was never her brother, before leaving Phobos to be sent to be imprisoned in the Infinite City with Miranda, Cedric, and all those loyal to him, while with Phobos's defeat, Meridian is restored to its more beautiful, pristine, green state.

Later on, a celebration is held as Elyon is crowned the new Queen of Meridian, and as she rides through town on horseback, in the crowd, Yan Lin asks the Mage to keep an eye on Phobos and his flunkies in the Infinite City to make certain they stay there. Meanwhile, Matt asks Will about their next adventure, indicating he and Will are a couple now, and Blunk also voices his part in being a hero as well due to what he did to Cedric earlier to help out the Guardians, which they commend him for. Will believes that it's all over now with Phobos safely locked away in the Infinite City, but down below, as the Mage checks in with the cells where Phobos and his forces are imprisoned, she quietly says to herself that now it all begins...

The episode contains the following tropes:

  • Alone with the Psycho: Rather, alone with the psycho and his army. Elyon happily sits on the throne when Phobos asks her, only to realize her mistake when vines shoot out and tether her to it. She goes Oh, Crap! as Phobos reveals she's not going to be queen but rather his new energy source, and he undoes the glamour on the castle to reveal its nightmarish form.
  • Big Brother Bully: Phobos reveals to Elyon that he didn't want her to be queen. Instead, he wanted to absorb her powers and leave her body as a lifeless husk. Elyon calls him out for this in the climax before getting her powers back and placing him in prison.
  • Death by Genre Savviness: Phobos realizes that the rebels will likely storm the coronation, and bumps it up a few hours early. Fortunately, Cornelia felt Elyon's terror and told Caleb and the Guardians they needed to go to Meridian now and start the attack.
  • Heel Realization: Elyon realizes that she was wrong about Phobos, her friends were completely right that she put her faith in the wrong people. As Cornelia frees her from the throne trap, Elyon apologizes for the harm she did. Cornelia reassures her it doesn't matter; what's important is Elyon is okay.
  • It Has Only Just Begun: The episode ends with Will telling Matt that she can't believe it's all over, only for the scene to cut to the Mage checking on the imprisoned bad guys and saying ominously that "now it all begins", foreboding the beginning of the second season.
  • Schmuck Bait: Phobos asks Elyon to sit on the throne. She does so without questioning why. He then takes the opportunity to use vines to hold her in place.
  • Spanner in the Works: Subverted; Matt and Blunk go to help out despite Will and the Guardians telling them to stay behind. Matt bravely takes on Phobos to save Will and the girls when the false king tries to steal the Heart of Kandrakar by force. He gets tossed aside for his troubles. It does, however, buy Will some time to hold onto the Heart of Kandrakar until Elyon and Cornelia intervene.
