Recap / Veronica Mars S 03 E 05 President Evil

Go To

Veronica finds Claire in the hallway of Hearst. Claire isn't pleased to see her, knowing she cleared the Pi Sigs of her rape, but as they walk outside, Veronica shows her the picture from the ATM that she received. Claire agrees to look at it, but she doesn't recognize the guy behind him, or the logo on his T-shirt. Veronica thanks her anyway.

Later, in Veronica's criminology class, Tim Foyle is teaching the class that day (Dr. Landry is testifying in court), and says they'll continue oral presentations. It's Veronica's turn, and she brings along Weevil (who's late) to do a presentation on him; bringing up his time in juvenile detention (700 days all told), his time running the PCHers, and the crime he's currently on parole for, all to talk about the socio-economic conditions that lead people like Weevil to crime. A little later, Weevil is entertaining the class by telling them tales such as one where the PCHers wrecked a car to take revenge on someone who messed with one of their bikes, only to realize they went after the wrong car. A girl asks Weevil if he misses the life, and after asking her not to tell his parole officer, he admits he misses the money and the thrill.

A little later, Veronica and Weevil are walking together through the quad area. He admires her necklace (which is Lily's), and she in turn comments on his dusty shirt, which he says is from the renovation work in the student union building. Weevil asks if Veronica has any Halloween plans. Veronica mentions she's going to Mercer's casino with Logan so he'll do something she likes, such as handing out candy to trick-or-treaters. Weevil is amused to hear Veronica is continuing her card shark ways, but gets upset when she hears she's going out with Logan, and storms off.

Meanwhile, in Wallace's mechanical engineering class, he gets his test back, and the results are not good.

Later, Veronica is carrying groceries to Mars Investigations when she sees a Porsche parked near the fire zone. When she gets inside, she yells out to Keith they should get the car towed, only to discover when she's in Keith's office that the owner of the car, Dean O'Dell, is there with his wife Mindy (Jaime Ray Newman). Veronica excuses herself to her desk, and Keith turns back to Mindy, mentioning her ex-husband.

Back at Hearst, Wallace goes to his class' TA, asking if he can drop the class, but the TA tells him the deadline has passed.

Back at Mars Investigations, Veronica enlarges the photo of Claire at the ATM, and discovers the logo on the boy's T-shirt is "Camp Waterloo". Veronica calls the camp up, pretending to be organizing a camp reunion, and asks them to e-mail all the attendees of the last five years. As she's finishing the call, Keith escorts Mindy and Dean O'Dell outside his office with a promise to track him down. Veronica asks if Keith sees how abrasive his personality is, but Keith tells her to take it easy; his stepson is dying, and Mindy wants Keith to track down the son's real father.

That night, Veronica goes to Mercer's casino dressed in costumer. Among the players are two guys wearing president's masks, and when Veronica comes in, they immediately pull out guns and hold up the place. Mercer, who's by the door, motions for everyone to stay calm, and he, Veronica and the others raise their hands. While the one wearing a Jimmy Carter mask gets Mercer to open up his safe, the one wearing a Richard Nixon mask takes the money and jewelry from the customers. When he gets to Veronica, she gives up her wallet, but refuses to give him Lily's necklace. Carter comes over, pushes Veronica against the wall, and rips the necklace off of her neck. He and Nixon leave the room, and Veronica looks angry.

A little later, a campus security officer named Harrison (Blake Shields) tries to take statements from the others, while Mercer tells Sasaki (David J. Lee), another campus security officer, how much money was in the cashbox (ten thousand). Logan comes in, oblivious to what happened (he was in class), and Veronica fills him in; he comforts her by hugging her. Lamb comes in and snarks on the proceedings, especially when he sees Logan and Veronica together. Lamb then starts to ask for IDs from everyone, until Veronica points out they've all been stolen. Lamb claims they'll get to the bottom of it, but Veronica says she knows who did it.

Meanwhile, Wallace is studying in his room. Mason (Robert Ri'chard), one of his basketball teammates, comes by, and teases him for being so diligent. Wallace sarcastically thanks him, and says he's wanted to be a mechanical engineer all of his life, and he's failing that. Mason decides he needs to go out.

The next day, at Mars Investigations, Keith calls Dean O'Dell and says he's found Steve. Keith has found out Steve is a voiceover actor, and has an idea for a sting operation.

That night, Weevil comes home from work to find Veronica and Backup in his apartment. Veronica accuses Weevil of robbing the casino and stealing Lily's necklace, which she believes because he said he missed the life, he heard about the casino from her, and the robber was covered in drywall dust and wearing the same cologne Weevil wears. Weevil, naturally, is pissed at Veronica, especially considering what they've been through together. He orders Veronica out of his apartment, and says he knows why she doesn't have more friends.

The next day, Veronica shows up late at Mars Investigations, while Keith and Cliff are already there. Cliff is pretending to be an auditioning actor, while Veronica is pretending to be a receptionist, though she wonders if she's had any experience at that. Outside the office, Steve Batando (Richard Grieco) looks to make sure he's got the right place, holds up his headshot, and goes in. Inside, while Cliff and Keith are "practicing" their auditions, Steve introduces himself to Veronica. She gets a "message" on the intercom, and says Cliff can go in; Cliff says he's not ready, and offers his spot to Steve, who accepts. Steve walks into Keith's office, only to find Dean O'Dell and Mindy waiting for him. He tries to leave, but Keith blocks his path. Steve accuses Mindy of sinking low just to get alimony, but she says it's not the reason; their son Jason is dying of bone cancer, he needs a marrow transplant, and only Steve's a match. This comes as news to both Steve and Keith, and Steve angrily tells Mindy there was a time when he could have been a dad, but Mindy kept him away from Jason. Dean O'Dell interrupts and tells Steve he's going to do it no matter what. Steve says Jason isn't his son anymore, and storms out as Mindy starts to cry.

That night, Weevil, just off of work, is heading to his car when he sees Logan. They start to snark on each other, but Lamb drives by, interrupting them. He and the deputies search Weevil's car, and discover jewelry that was taken in the casino robbery. As Logan happily watches, Lamb handcuffs Weevil and puts him in a squad car.

A little later, at the sheriff's department, Veronica comes in, and Lamb is surprised to discover Veronica actually believes Weevil did it. She asks about what she found in Weevil's car; apparently, he used a stolen credit card to pay for a pizza. Veronica thinks about this.

A little later, she visits Weevil in his cell. He insists again he didn't rob anybody, and someone had sent him a pizza which he accepted because he could use one. She says she'll look into it. Weevil says she could just take his word for it, and after a pause, they both laugh at how unlikely that is.

Meanwhile, Wallace is attempting to study when there's a knock at the door. It's Mason, with two girls. He's brought by microwave popcorn and The Hills Have Eyes (2006). Wallace says he's busy, so Mason gives him the number of a tutor, whom he says is a miracle worker. Wallace smiles and lets them in.

The next day, Veronica goes to Mama Mia's, the pizza place who sent Weevil the pizza. The person at the counter is Danny (Ryan Pinkston), who recognizes Veronica and immediately starts gushing over her past escapades, including cutting Wallace down from the flagpole. Veronica interrupts him by asking about the order. Turns out it was an Internet order, and Danny eagerly calls the Internet service provider, pretending to be the manager.

Later, in a computer room at Hearst, Veronica tracks to order to a computer that was used near the construction going on in the building, which doesn't necessarily rule out Weevil, but does allow for more suspects, which makes Veronica unhappy. She's even more unhappy when she figures out she sat on a stick of gum. Veronica sees a little girl (Rachel Rogers) chewing gum, and asks how the gum ended up on her chair. The little girl retorts, "I thought this was supposed to be a good school. Shouldn't you be, like, smart?", and storms off into a room that says "Hearst College Police Department" on the door.

Meanwhile, at Mars Investigations, Cliff is entertaining Keith by telling him about his new client (who Really Gets Around) when they're interrupted by Lamb and Detective Sanchez (Rueben Gonzales), from the LAPD. Turns out Steve Batando's missing, and since Keith was seen snooping around it, he's the chief suspect in his disappearance. Cliff interrupts by acting as Keith's lawyer, Sanchez and Lamb leave. A little later, Keith finds out Dean O'Dell's son Jason is no longer in the hospital, so now he thinks Dean O'Dell and Mindy kidnapped Steve...

...and a little later, he storms into Dean O'Dell's office, demanding to know what's going on. The dean admits Mindy has taken Jason to Mexico, and he doesn't know where. Keith agrees to help track her down.

At the sheriff's department, Weevil tells Veronica one of his co-workers found the masks and the guns in a dumpster behind the dorm where the robbery took place. He also says the guns were fake, which surprises Veronica.

In the theater department, by the stage, several actors dressed for their opening night production of Theatre/Tartuffe, only they can't go onstage because the film department, to take revenge on them for scheduling the play on the night of their short film festival, sprayed the stage with cooking spray. They also tell Veronica she should ask the film department about the prop guns.

Meanwhile, Wallace knocks on a room door, and Max (Adam Rose) answers. He immediately guesses why Wallace is there, and merely asks what class and teacher. Max tells Wallace the good news, which is his teacher hasn't changed his exam in three years, and offers Wallace two choices; a study guide, which is $100, and the answers, which are another $100. Wallace takes the study guide.

Later, Veronica joins Logan in the food court, where the short film festival is happening. Veronica looks around for "film geeks" to grill, but Logan points to the screen, where the film shown has a guy in a Nixon mask and another in a Carter mask robbing a store. Later, after the film is over, Veronica finds the film's director (Wyatt Fenner) and points out the coincidence. The director is more interested in trying to get Logan to invest in the film (which he won't), but admits his equipment was stolen, and though campus police found everything else, the guns and masks were missing.

Meanwhile, Wallace is attempting to use the study guide, but it's not helping. Sure enough, a little later, he's back in front of Max's door with another $100.

The next day, at a hospital in Mexico, Keith angrily confirms Dean O'Dell led him on a wild goose chase, since Jason is actually in a hospital in San Diego, since Mindy's uncle is an oncologist there. Dean O'Dell is unapologetic ("He's my son"), and confirms without saying anything that Steve has been dragged there too.

Meanwhile, Wallace finishes his test early, and brings it up to Professor Winkler, who looks in surprise when Wallace leaves, and frowns when he reads the test.

Veronica brings Backup to visit Harrison at his house, and accuses him of stealing her necklace. Harrison condescendingly treats Veronica as if she's a Girl Scout. Veronica accuses him and his partner, Sasaki, of robbing the casino because they couldn't get Mercer to shut it down, and framing Weevil for it. She brings out the masks, and says the police can pull DNA from them. Harrison tries to grab the masks, but Backup growls at him. He then asks Veronica for a day to get the necklace back, but then police sirens sound and Veronica reveals she's been recording him the whole time.

Meanwhile, in a San Diego hospital, Keith storms through the hallway as Dean O'Dell pleads with him. He insists they're not going to let Steve die, and asks Keith what he would do if Veronica's life were on the line like this. This stops Keith short.

Back at Harrison's house, Lamb tells Veronica he couldn't find her necklace, but he did find other items stolen from the casino, and guesses Harrison' partner might have it. Lamb sees the TV news crews, and as he goes over, tells Veronica it's easier to her to play by the rules like this. Veronica, still dejected, goes back to her car. She sees a school bus drop off the bratty little girl she saw in the computer room approach Harrison, who is her father. After the two of them talk briefly, the girl runs over to Veronica and yells at her for getting her father arrested. Veronica, however, just reaches down, grabs Lily's necklace off of the girl's neck, and leaves.

Wallace answers a knock at his door. It's Winkler's TA, who hands him an envelope and leads Wallace to Winkler's office.

Weevil gets let out of his jail cell.

In a hospital room, Dean O'Dell and Mindy look at Jason, who's attached to a breathing apparatus, but seems fine otherwise.

Back at the sheriff's department, Keith brings Steve into Lamb's office. Steve apologizes for causing trouble, and says he was on a camping trip. Lamb doesn't look convinced, but has to let him and Keith go. Outside, Steve tells Keith Mindy now owes him, gets into Mindy's Porsche, and drives off.

In the computer terminal at Hearst, Veronica checks her e-mail, which includes an e-mail from Camp Waterloo...

...and a little later, she and Logan knock on a door of a house. A guy named Ben opens it, and Veronica asks for Wang Yi, who turns out to be Ben's roommate. He also tells a shocked Veronica that Wang is Claire's boyfriend.
