Go To

  • Date First Aired: 01/10/1991

Ben is having a bit of a secret and going somewhere involving what appears to be a woman.

Meanwhile, the new area manager, Rory Castell, has come to the bakery, and he's the boss from hell, quickly firing the part-timers and forcing Bill to reschedule the dentists. The result is that she shows up still slurring from a filling and struggles to get through the identification portions of the test. Thanks to Angelo however, she manages to pass. Whilst she and Ben go bowling in the aftermath, Jenny is dealing with a crisis - Scott has chucked her! Thankfully, Rona manages to get her through the heartbreak with her own tales of failed romances and dashs from the alter. Back at the bowling alley, Bill wins, but finds out Ben's secret - although he doesn't have a woman, he did use the tax rebate from several episodes back on a hideous-looking car.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Accidental Misnaming: This time, Bill misnames Spin (now being referred to as his real name of Scott) as "Spot".
  • Alliterative Name: The sprays considered to remove the scene of dog poop include "Misty Moments" and "Mellow Moods".
  • Bad Boss: Rory Castell, the new area manager to Rona and Bill, is demeaning to the women, perverted, and quickly fires the part-timers.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Ben is heading out somewhere and spending time with a "beautiful love-bitch". This, coupled with the Ambiguous Situation involving Pauline from last episode, may lead one to believe that he's having an affair behind Bill's back. He's actually referring to a new car he bought.
  • The Bet: Bill and Ben make one involving bowling - if she wins, Ben has to do his own ironing. Forever. If Ben wins however, Bill has to do all the decorating. Forever. Ben seemingly wins, until he hits the wrong lane on the last ball.
  • Bowling for Ratings: Bill and Ben go bowling in the second half of the episode. Bill ends up doing much better than she expected and manages to beat Ben.
  • Driving Test: Bill takes her driving test this episode. Whilst it is fraught with some difficulty, she manages to successfully pass.
  • Driving Test Smashers: Bill has to deal with a recent filling slurring her words, an impromptu car washer, and almost getting a question involving cars crossing lines wrong on her car exam. Thanks to Angelo reminding her though, she does manage to pass.
  • Fictional Document: Rona briefly reads a book called Dirty Taxes by Andrew Davies whilst at Bill's house.
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: After talking about their respective failed romances, Jenny and Rona decide to tuck into the ice cream from the freezer.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Whilst up to this point, Jenny has acted like a Bratty Teenage Daughter, she admits that she didn't want to tell her mother about her boy troubles as she didn't want to ruin her night out.
  • Knocking on Heathens' Door: A group of religious salesmen show up at Bill's door, and try to advertise their magazine. She promptly purchases one and uses it to clean up dog poop.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: All the time that Ben is spending at the lock-up is beginning to make others suspect that he has a woman. It isn't - it's a new car he bought.
  • Noodle Incident: Ben recalls the time that he and Bill had to walk home in the rain after a match with Jeff and Ruth, although Bill is quick to remind him that it wasn't actually her he walked home with. He also recalls a time in Bournemouth that they went bowling, although Bill is quick to remind him that she wasn't there either. Bill then recalls a third incident, but little is known beyond Ben's surprise that he had gotten involved.
  • Road Apples: David steps on dog poop and spreads it all over the living room.
Bill: Next time I see that dog, I'm gonna sellotape up it's bottom!
  • Runaway Bride: Rona recounts how she used to go out with a boy who soon asked her to marry him. However, when she went up the aisle, she realized that his best mate looked sexy and that it meant that she didn't really love him enough. With this in mind, she promptly fled and went back home.
  • Ship Sinking: After having been a couple since "Leader of the Pack", Scott dumps Jenny.
