  • Do You Want to Haggle?: When John tries to convince Granny and Watts to throw in a few missiles with his upgrades.
    Granny: You can have one.
    Watts: What? Granny, come on.
    John: Three.
    Granny: Two.
    Quiet: Twenty.
    Watts/Granny: Zero.
    John: [glares at Quiet] Okay. One it is.
  • For Doom the Bell Tolls: The presence of the Holy Men is signaled by church bells being heard in the distance.
  • The "Fun" in "Funeral": Almost immediately after Granny's funeral, the Convoy immediately parties to Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone".
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Before the apocalypse, Granny was a real estate agent named Cathy Stropton. She eventually became the leader of the convoy and earned the nickname Granny Dread.
  • King on His Deathbed: Granny Dread is the matriarch of the Convoy and is dying. She appoints Miranda Watts to take over.
  • "Knock Knock" Joke: The episode opens up with John trying to tell Quiet one, but she isn't familiar with the type of joke and thinks it's stupid when John explains it to her. At the end of the episode he tries again and she responds "Who's there?", showing their growing bond.
  • Human Resources: Amber uses dead bodies as fertilizer but she only uses Asshole Victims like Holy Men from Preacher's gang.
  • Mercy Kill: The medicine Granny orders doesn't heal her, it only makes her more comfortable as she dies.
  • Mobile City: The Convoy is made up of several interconnected big rigs.
  • Mythology Gag: Watt's homemade missiles are referred to as "blood missiles", which was the name of a weapon that could be used by Roadkill and Outlaw in Twisted Metal (2012).
  • Never Mess with Granny: She earned the nickname Granny Dread for a reason.
  • Shipper on Deck: Granny Dread’s final wish to Miranda is to get back together with Amber.
  • Shout-Out: John and Quiet hide from the Holy Men in a movie theater. There are posters for Punch-Drunk Love and A Knight's Tale. John and Quiet watch Blankman
  • Slipping a Mickey: When Amber meets John and Quiet, she offers them lemonade. It turns out that she poisoned it because she assumed they were Holy Men.
  • Spit Shake: This is how Granny and John agree on their deal.
  • Spotting the Thread: Granny is initially introduced as a wheelchair bound lady who can barely see anything in front of her. John points out that her oxygen tubes aren't actually connected to anything. Seeing that her ploy for sympathy has failed, Granny gets out of her chair and talks to John and Quiet normally.
  • Take That!: When John and Quiet hide in a movie theater, Quiet throws her axe into a cardboard cutout for The Master of Disguise.
  • Viking Funeral: After Granny dies, her followers put her body in her car, push it out the back of a truck, and blow it up.
