Recap / True Detective S 4 E 03 Part 3

Go To

The search for Raymond Clark continues. Hank recruits some of his hunter friends to assist, angering Danvers. Navarro and Danvers examine the 19 boxes of evidence in the trailer found last episode, which include pictures of Annie. After examining the pictures and finding some clues, they go off to question Susan, the hair dresser who went to the Tsalal station to give haircuts. She tells them that Annie went with her one time and hit it off with Clark. Susan herself hit it up with station engineer Oliver Tagaq, but he disappeared shortly before Annie's murder. Back during the murder investigation Susan had phoned in an anonymous tip to Hank, who did nothing with it. Danvers and Navarro confront him about it. He proves supremely unhelpful and disrespectful, which gets him a cup of coffee in the face from Danvers.

Thanks to a blizzard, the forensic technician is unable to get to Ennis, so Peter Prior gets the next best thing: his cousin, a large-animal vet. He takes a look at the frozen bodies in the rink and determines that it was not the cold what killed them. He speculates that it might have been cardiac arrest but cannot be more specific. Afterwards, Danvers and Navarro locate Oliver Tagaq at the nomadic camp where he lives. Pointing his shotgun at them, he orders them to leave.

And Anders Lund, the scientist who had been in an induced coma, wakes up. Danvers and Navarro go off to question him. He is incoherent, but blurts out that they "woke her". Danvers is called away to assist during a confrontation at the hospital between the hunters and security, leaving Navarro alone with Lund. He sits up, and sounding completely lucid, tells Navarro that her mother says hello and is waiting for her. Then he flatlines.

Peter Prior has managed to crack Annie's phone. A video shows her saying "I found it, it’s here. I found it", before someone or something offscreen attacks her.

Tropes present in this episode

  • Anger Born of Worry: Danvers is angry when she sees Leah is still wearing the traditional tattoo on her chin and forced her to wipe it off. On the surface, it hints that she is a Wicked Stepmother. But rather, given Annie's murder, she is afraid of what could happen to Leah if she insists on exploring her heritage.
  • Clean, Pretty Childbirth: Averted. The tub water is cloudy when the baby is delivered.
  • Establishing Character Moment: During a flashback, Annie is helping to deliver a baby. Navarro arrives in the middle of the process to arrest her for vandalism and trespassing at the mining operation. Annie calmly but firmly stands her ground; she will not go anywhere with Navarro until she is done delivering the baby. She keeps her word.
  • Food Slap: During Danvers and Navarro's confrontation with Hank Prior, he threatens to file a complaint about Danvers having an inappropriate relationship with her subordinate, his son Peter. Danvers throws her coffee in his face.
  • Get Out!: Danvers and Navarro go to the nomadic camp Oliver Tagaq lives. At his abode, he yells at them to go unless they have a warrant and points his shotgun at them. They retreat and aware that the rest of the camp are viewing them with hostility, they leave.
  • Screaming Birth: Episode begins with a flashback seven years earlier. Navarro (still in the Ennis police department) has come to arrest Annie Kowtok for trespassing, but the latter refuses to go until she is done helping a screaming Inupiak woman who is giving birth.
  • Shout-Out:
    • In one of Annie Kowtok's pictures, she is wearing an Ariana Grande shirt. Apparently Leah used to be obsessed with her, and this gives Danvers an idea of how old the picture is.
    • The Graduate: Hank Prior threatens to accuse Danvers of pulling a "Mrs. Robinson" on his son Peter.
  • Tragic Stillbirth: In the middle of a meeting to protest the mining operation, the main speaker announces that a couple in the community just suffered one, and leads the crowd in a Moment of Silence.
