Recap / Trigun Stampede E 02 The Running Man

Go To

After finding out Vash's bounty worth of $$6,000,000 the townspeople of Jeneora Rock immediately do everything they can to capture and turn him in. As Vash attempts to flee, two outlaws from the Nebraska family make their way to Jeneora Rock to claim Vash's bounty for themselves.

Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • A-Team Firing: The townsfolk of Jeneora Rock have abysmal accuracy, although this could be excused by their guns being unprofessionally made out of local scrap and their lack of combat experience. Vash's coat is also bulletproof, so any that hit wouldn't be noticeable.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Despite Nebraska pointing out how the townspeople of Jeneora Rock literally turn their guns on Vash in a heartbeat, Vash doesn't care. They were nice to him and that's all that really matters for him.
  • Cassandra Truth: Vash divulges his story for Meryl and Roberto, claiming he has an Evil Twin named Millions Knives who's the one actually stealing the Plants, not him. Neither of the reporters buy the story, saying it was too far-fetched and how there wasn't enough evidence to support Vash's claims. If they only knew what would happen in the next episode...
  • Commonality Connection: Vash's complaint about how much bullets cost comes back when Father Nebraska is reluctant to fire a rocket because they're expensive to replace; as Vash himself wryly notes, "We all have our problems." Similarly, Father Nebraska manages to wring some sympathy out of Rosa by demonstrating he loves his son as she loves hers.
  • Dance Battler: Vash performs some neat flips and spins when avoiding Gofsef's Rocket Punch. This greatly annoys both Nebraskas.
  • Dodge the Bullet: Vash performs this multiple times throughout the episode, from managing to barely dodge a rain of gunfire to one of Nebraska's rockets.
  • Did Not Think This Through: The Nebraska's basically bumble their way into their current situation of trying to capture Vash for his bounty. Gofsef punches the driver out of the car on his father's orders, and neither of them really know how to drive.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Even as a hardened criminal, Father Nebraska clearly cares for his son Gofsef. He immediately forgoes taking Jeneora Rock's Plant when Gofsef's life is in danger, and pleads for Rosa to help save his son. His parental love and her shame over betraying Vash touches Rosa enough that she agrees.
  • Evil Twin: During Vash's interview with Meryl, she recounts his story back to him. The person actually running around stealing the Plants isn't Vash, but his identical twin brother. Roberto comments on the "evil twin" story being too convenient and Meryl clearly doesn't think Vash is telling the truth. Vash slumps down on the diner table when he realizes they don't believe him.
  • Friend to All Children: Vash thanks Tonis for the cage of bugs and promises to keep his "friends" safe for him. He even playfully tousles the kid's hair. As the Nebraska's come barrelling towards Tonis, who has his back turned to them, both Vash and Rosa leap at Tonis to get him out of the way.
  • Hope Spot: The episode seems set to end on an optimistic note, as everyone — even the Nebraskas — heads to the bar for a round, with the town's Plants safe. Vash's ideals have triumphed and people are learning to get along. Then explosive drones suddenly pour in and attach themselves to everyone present, but especially Gofsef, who barely has time to move away from anyone else before they go off. They explode as he helplessly looks to his father, and the episode ends.
  • Mama Bear: Rosa's reason for turning on Vash so quickly was because her children and the others at Jeneora Rock needed the money for the Plant. She's tired of watching her people suffer and the money they need to fix it all happens to be right in front of them.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Rosa has a wordless reaction along these lines as Father Nebraska points out the town turned on Vash in a heartbeat to save themselves. That Vash defends and forgives them anyway, even helping to save their Plant, inspires her to try and make peace with the Nebraskas in turn.
  • Precious Photo: The first scene of the episode that isn't a flashback is Vash sitting at a desk maintaining his gun with the photo of Rem, himself and Nai as kids propped up beside him, demonstrating he carries it with him wherever he goes.
  • Rocket Punch: How Gofsef operates, launching his fist out to punch someone, or grapple something from afar.
  • Shoot the Bullet: As Father Nebraska fires on Vash, Vash calmly raises his gun and shoots the bullet down.
  • Skewed Priorities: Vash's only concern about his wanted poster was why they had to use the photo of him smiling goofily at the camera.
  • Uncertain Doom: Gofsef flees the bar after being covered by weird drones, which explode soon afterwards.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Once they manage to shake off the Nebraskas, Meryl scolds Vash on his choice to run instead of standing his ground and fighting the criminals. It doesn't make him a hero, just a coward. Vash quietly asks what's wrong with running away if it means he can avoid unnecessary bloodshed and save other people, and it's revealed his plan wasn't to fight the Nebraskas or to run from them, but to draw them away from Jeneora Rock. (Unfortunately, they figure it out and decide to make off with the town's healthy Plant instead.)
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Meryl hides behind her notebook when Tonis brings up his worms in a cage. She doesn't look up until Tonis runs away with his bugs in tow.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Father Nebraska's reaction to Vash shooting a bullet out of the air, complete with a comically exaggerated Jaw Drop.
    Nebraska: Seriously?
