Recap / Total Drama: "Riot on Set"

Go To

Newly christened team captains Gwen and Trent pick their teams. The newly formed teams are then thrown into their first team challenge: hauling a bunch of movie equipment up hill and then performing a scene.

Tropes:

  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Chef, seeing a little of himself in DJ, decides to toughen him up, quoting this exact trope, because he won't let DJ refuse.
  • Aspect Ratio Switch: Episodes of the show are normally in 16:9, but Duncan and Izzy's performances in the acting challenge are taken in 3:1.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Harold does this for much of the episode. The Grips and Gaffers (the people who work on movies) are mocked by the contestants, and loudly complain about it.
  • Foreshadowing: When trying to memorize the script, Duncan notes that they are "way out of left field". While at first it seems like he's just trying to weasel out of doing it, we later learn that the scripts were swapped, explaining Duncan's confusion.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Gwen picking Duncan first causes Trent to become one of these. Subverted with Gwen who's less concerned with him picking Lindsay and more concerned with what the gesture meant.
  • Hidden Depths: Duncan proves to be a fantastic actor, enough to move everyone to tears.
  • Insult Friendly Fire: Gwen calls out Trent for choosing all the good-looking people for his team as a means to tick her off. But Gwen already picked Leshawna and Duncan for her team and they're not pleased about how her words classify them as ugly.
  • Keeping the Enemy Close: Gwen chooses Heather to be on her team (the Screaming Gaffers) due to Leshawna suggesting this trope.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Trent bringing Lindsay onto his team to spite Gwen only screws him over during the challenge later.
  • Manly Tears: Duncan does this to sell his scene.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Trent picking "The Beautiful Lindsay" for his team.
  • Playing Against Type: In-Universe. Due to Chris shuffling the scripts around, Duncan ends up playing an elderly person looking back at their life and Izzy a gangster. Duncan rises to the challenge and absolutely kills the roll however, while Izzy fails horribly due to her insanity.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "quiet on set".
  • Reincarnation: Izzy claims that she's one to her Great-Grandmother Mavis.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Discussed by Beth at the beginning of the episode, who thought that they might be getting a nicer host this time around.
  • Sand In My Eyes: A teary-eyed Chris calls cut on Duncan's performance, insisting it's too much for Chef.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stop Being Stereotypical: Inverted; Duncan doesn't want to take the part of the criminal for the Gaffers, since he doesn't want to be typecast.
  • Training from Hell: Chef vows to do this to DJ in order to toughen him up.
