Recap / Total Drama: "Ice to Beat You"

Go To

The campers enter the last iceberg from the North Pole, facing either an obstacle course or a maze to retrieve keys meant to open a safe to retrieve a Chris coin.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Nichelle quit because she found a contract for another movie for her lying on her bed. However, after her elimination, it's revealed that the contract was merely forged by Julia.
  • Bad Hair Day: Chris has one after MK steals his hair dryer. He tries to fix it with Chef's hairdresser experience, but Chef is decades out of practice and only capable of making equally outdated styles.
  • Bait-and-Switch: You'd be forgiven for thinking that Zee was being set up to be the next boot because of how his desperation to keep Priya's crush on Caleb a secret causes him to screw up during the challenge, but it's actually Nichelle who leaves by quitting the entire competition after getting tricked into doing so by Julia.
  • Call-Back: The angry seals from Total Drama World Tour make a return as cannon ammunition against the Team Rat Face and chomp onto Damien's arm, Axel's foot and Zee's butt.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Continuing on from the last episode where he accidentally spilled the plan that Priya had come up with for the challenge to Emma, Zee is revealed to not be able to keep a secret to save his life in this episode and has to spend the whole challenge drinking Lucious Lychee Soda pop just to be able to keep his mouth shut.
  • Continuity Nod: Sasquatchanakwa (or as it's more often referred to in later seasons, Yeti) was still frozen after the events of "Scarlett Fever." However, judging by the fact that the iceberg came from the North Pole, it may have been a different one instead.
  • Dumb Muscle: Axel serves as this to her team, thinking the holes in the wall with the boots are handholds and trying to use them to get across. Priya has to warn her they are not hand holds, but she's already hit and the first one for her team out.
  • Enemy Civil War: Team Skunk Butt is divided into MK, Julia, and Ripper, who are all for cheating, and Bowie, Raj, and Wayne, who don't want to cheat (well, Bowie doesn't mind the advantage that it gives them, but he does mind how much it is upsetting Raj). The two halves come to blows (via snowball fight) when Bowie objects to Julia stealing Team Rat Face's coin, nearly costing them the challenge.
  • Evil Is Petty: Julia orchestrates Nichelle's elimination because the latter had insulted her, claiming that her best bet as an actress would be a "small town dinner theater."
  • Hands Go Down: Chris explains the challenge wearing a large hat (because MK has stolen his hairdryer). When he has finished, he asks:
    Chris: Any questions?
    (everyone's hands go up)
Chris: ...that aren't about my hat?
    (hands go down)
  • History Repeats: Nichelle quitting the show after finding a way to make more money than the one the million-dollar prize money offers, only for the deal to turn out to be a dud that was forged by Julia, mirrors what happened to Anne Maria in Revenge of the Island, who quit the show in "A Mine Is a Terrible Thing to Waste" after finding a huge diamond, having decided that the prize money had become irrelevant, only for Chris to inform her that what she found was actually cubic zirconia, which is practically worthless.
  • Make-Out Kids: Axel and Ripper spent all night making out, even being surprised that it's daytime when Caleb and Priya come across them.
  • Malaproper: Raj refers to Sasquatchanakwa as "an adorable snowman". Bowie clarifies in the confessional that Raj meant to say "abominable".
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Team Skunk Butt has two moments of this. First time when they face the yeti, and the second when the brakes on their bobbled break, causing them to lose control.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Bowie has this reaction when he accidentally gives Julia the idea to melt through the maze, admitting that giving up on cheating is harder then he thought.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: Nichelle finds a contract for her movie career on her pillow, and promptly quits Total Drama during the elimination ceremony to get her stardom back. Too bad the contract was written by Julia, and therefore, fake.
  • Potty Emergency: Zee mentions that he needs to pee badly in the middle of the ice obstacle course challenge after drinking too many sodas in an attempt to keep Priya's crush on Caleb a secret. Priya tells him that he can just go wherever he needs to because they are surrounded by snow and ice at the moment, but because he's so distracted by the stress of having to remember to keep her crush on Caleb a secret, he accidentally goes on one of the ice platforms that leads to their last key and melts it down so that they can no longer use it anymore.
  • Pretender Diss: Julia and Nichelle's opinion of each other. Julia rightly points out that Nichelle is now a White-Dwarf Starlet desperate to stay relevant and waves the idea of auditioning for a movie herself, and Nichelle says that Julia's best bet is "small town dinner theater" in response.
  • Running Gag:
    • Zee chugging sodas to stop himself from sharing Priya's secret.
    • All the ridiculous hairstyles that Chef keeps giving to Chris, much to his dismay.
  • Secret-Keeper: Zee discovers Priya's crush on Caleb, but is sworn into silence to not tell anyone, least of all Caleb.
  • Series Continuity Error: Chris has hair trouble in the episode when MK steals his hairdryer, forcing him to get help from Chef to fix it with a hairstyling chair. This however contradicts the Action finale “Aftermath IV: Who Wants To Pick A Millionaire”, which revealed that Chris is bald and that his hairstyle is actually a toupee. It is possible Chris may have had a hair transplant since then though.
  • Story-Breaker Power: MK steals Chris's hair dryer, allowing the Skunk Butts to melt their way through the maze and even the ice safes where the coins are.
