Go To

Tropes

  • Asshole Victim: The entire asylum staff are all unsympathetic jackasses, so no one's gonna be sad after they all die.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: The Mad Doctor zaps Gar with a cattle prod to make him change. He does, to tear his tormentor to pieces.
  • Bedlam House: The setting of the episode.
  • Blood-Splattered Innocents: Gar makes his first kill as a tiger, and goes on a Heroic BSoD after reverting to his human form covered in his Asshole Victim's blood.
  • Blatant Lies: When Rachel wants to go after her mom at the asylum, Dick, Gar and Kory disagree because it's not safe. It turns out Gar lied and wants to help Rachel, declaring he learned from living with Dr. Caulder to tell people what they want to hear so they'll leave you alone.
  • Chekhov's Lecture: During the beginning of the episode, Dick stops Kory for using her powers within the asylum due to the gas pipes surround it. Near the end, Dick asks Kory to do just that to destroy the place.
  • Face Your Fears: Dick hallucinates his younger self, beating him up and furious about what he's made them.
  • Future Me Scares Me: Dick hallucinates his teenage self giving him "The Reason You Suck" Speech for becoming a violent person.
  • Heroic Willpower: Dick manages to resist the drug he's given, apparently thanks to mental training he received (presumably from Batman). The doctors double the dosage regardless of the risk of killing him.
  • Let the Past Burn: The episode ends with Dick watching his Robin suit burn in the fire, symbolising how he finally let go of being Robin.
  • Mysterious Parent: Rachel meets her birth mother, Angela.
  • The Place: Referring to the Bedlam House the episode is set in.
  • Idiot Ball:
    • Dick and Kory could have avoided the entire plot by just bringing Rachel and Gar into their planning. Instead they get impatient and rush off to rescue Rachel's mother, get captured by guards and then used as a hostage to force Dick and Kory to surrender.
    • Rachel, the one the villains know is really dangerous, is left free and unmonitored in Dr. Adamson's office.
  • The Promise: Rachel reminds Dick that he promised he wasn't going to leave her.
  • Rage Against the Reflection: After his No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on the asylum guards, Dick sees his reflection on a water. Remembering his fear of becoming a Blood Knight, he promptly drops the wrench he used as a weapon on it.
  • Secret Underground Passage: Subverted; the guards know all about them and are waiting when Dick and Kory enter that way.
  • Self-Mutilation Demonstration: Dr. Adamson cuts his own throat to reveal Rachel's healing abilities to her. Unfortunately she's more than capable of taking her healing back.
  • Strapped to an Operating Table: Upon being captured, Kory gets strapped to an operating table and cut open.
  • They Would Cut You Up: The asylum staff planned to study Kory's biology by dissecting her while she's awake.
  • Wrench Whack: Dick uses one as a weapon against the guards towards the end of the episode.
