Recap / Titans S 1 E 4 Doom Patrol

Go To

Gar brings Rachel home to his “family” – a group of misfit medical experiments we’ll come to know as the Doom Patrol (including Robotman, Negative Man and Elastigirl).

Tropes

  • Bad Powers, Good People: Rachel uses her powers to bring first a deer, than a woman injured in a liquid nitrogen accident back to life.
  • Cooldown Hug: Dick gives one to Rachel, stopping her from opening a portal to...somewhere.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The Doom Patrol is vaguely menacing and creepy in places but they're a delightfully friendly bunch.
  • Family of Choice: The Doom Patrol is obviously a loving and caring group that has raised Beast Boy well despite (or because of) their quirks. Nevertheless they insist that he leave with the others so he can have the life that's denied them.
  • Food Porn: Dinner chez Doom Patrol looks absolutely incredible, with a long loving pan over plates of burgers, pasta, fried chicken, waffles...
    • In-Universe for Robotman who has no taste, so can only enjoy the sight of others eating.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Plenty in Gar's room, including:
    • Figures of Godzilla and Rodan on a shelf.
  • Hope Spot: Rather than be creeped out or upset by the Doom Patrol, Rachel swiftly finds herself fitting into the group and seems like she's found a better home than the (nonexistent and dysfunctional) Titans. That's when the Chief tries to experiment on her.
  • Mad Doctor: The Chief is very interested in experimenting on Rachel, regardless of her consent. When Gar tries to stop him, he knocks him out with a Tranquilizer Dart and proceeds regardless.
  • Never My Fault: Kory blames Dick for what happened at the Convent for leaving Rachel alone, despite the fact he only left because Kory stole his car.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Dick delivers one to a hunter that he thought had hurt Rachel. He has a My God, What Have I Done? on realising the man's son is in the next room, and he never harmed Rachel in the first place.
  • Poorly Disguised Pilot: For Doom Patrol (2019). It does a decent job of setting everyone up (sans Crazy Jane and Cyborg), although the actual show is a parallel timeline per cast & crew commentary and Crisis on Infinite Earths.
  • Strapped to an Operating Table: The first sign that Rachel's 'examination' will not go well is when the Chief insists on this trope.
  • Super-Power Meltdown: Rachel's reaction to the Chief hurting Gar.
  • You Are Not Alone: Dick assures Rachel that he's there for her.
