Recap / 30 Rock S2 E5 "Greenzo"

Go To

For NBC's "Green Week", Jack comes up with a business-friendly mascot for environmentalism, named "Greenzo" (played by David Schwimmer), but Jared, the actor who plays Greenzo, lets the fame get to his head. Meanwhile, Tracy boosts the attendance of one of Kenneth's lame parties by spreading rumors about who's coming.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Binge Montage: Kenneth's party becomes wildly debauched, with drinking, fighting, and all sorts of bizarre, inappropriate behavior. Everyone is sore, hung over and miserable the next morning (except for Kenneth, who's very upset.)
  • Biting-the-Hand Humor: The premise of the show's "Green Week" episode is that "Green Week" is pointless.
  • The Cameo: Meredith Viera, Al Gore, and a Harlem Globetrotter all make appearances as themselves.
  • Gilligan Cut: Everyone is hooting and hollering as they get ready to go to Kenneth's party, then cuts to the next morning where they're all in Jack's office appearing disheveled and ashamed by what happened.
  • Green Aesop: Although the episode was made as a part of NBC's "Green Week", the moral of the story is that a corporate-backed attempt at environmentalism is destined to fail, as real solutions to the problem of global warming would involve taking on corporate greed.
  • Jerkass: Jared, the actor who plays Greenzo, is a bullying, egotistical asshole.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: The episode aired as a part of NBC's "Green Week" out of universe, and takes place during that week in universe. Al Gore even suggests the week to Jack as a more appropriate response.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: In this case, it's not Pete's wife who suspects an affair, but Liz. It turns out that Pete is having an affair...with his wife. She gets a rush out of sneaking around.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Everyone is deeply ashamed the morning after Kenneth's party.
    Kenneth: Harlem Globetrotter.
(Everyone turns to look at a Harlem Globetrotter standing at the back of the room)
Kenneth: Does that name mean nothing to you?
  • Nature Hero: Greenzo pretends to be one. Al Gore, apparently, actually is one.
Al Gore: A whale is in trouble! I have to go.
  • Old Shame: Jack used to intern for the famously liberal Senator Ted Kennedy, and was apparently a liberal himself. He's quite embarrassed by that fact, and shushes Al Gore when he starts to talk about it.
  • Sarcastic Clapping: After calling out everyone for what they did, Kenneth applauds everyone and says they were all present for his last party ever.
  • Shoddy Shindig: Kenneth's parties are usually this. They're usually lame and cheap, which is why Liz is the only one who bothers to go.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Greenzo has a comically inflated opinion of himself, and compares himself to a power as implacable as the wind.
