Recap / 30 Rock S1 E11 "The Head and the Hair"

Go To

Liz and Jenna have their eyes on a pair of executives who they nickname "The Head" and "The Hair". Meanwhile, Tracy dictates his autobiography to Frank and Toofer, and Jack becomes a page and works under Kenneth as a part of the "Bottoms Up" program.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • The Alcoholic: Brian Williams apparently ducks out at lunchtime to buy liquor.
  • All for Nothing: Tracy makes Frank and Toofer type out his entire autobiography in a day, only to remember at the end that he was rejected for the book deal, making all their effort pointless.
  • Bad Boss: Josh (and by extension the rest of the talent at NBC) is implied to be this to Kenneth.
  • The Beard: Liz initially suspects that Gray might be looking for one, and says that she "doesn't do that anymore".
  • The Cameo: John McEnroe appears as himself, hosting Gold Case.
  • Ceiling Cling: A pizza is stuck to the ceiling of Brian Williams' dressing room, and falls down to interrupt a particularly dramatic moment.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Liz laments early in the episode that she won't be able to buy anything with a hundred dollar bill, as no store would be willing to break down the change. Indeed, when she goes to a bodega with Gray later, the cashier refuses her hundred-dollar bill, and Liz and Gray's shared anger over the situation brings them closer together.
  • Defacement Insult: Brian Williams wrote "KATIE COURIC SUCKS" on the wall of his dressing room, which Jack and Kenneth have to wash off.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The concept of Gold Case is similar to the real-life Deal or No Deal, with one of the cases carrying gold bars worth a million dollars. Of course, gold is heavy, which made it trivially easy to guess which case held the gold (whichever model was struggling to carry it).
  • Double Entendre: Jack drops this gem when talking to Kenneth about the "Bottoms Up" program, where a high-level executive works on the lowest rung of the ladder for a day.
Jack: I'm gonna be your bottom, Kenneth, and I want you to ride me as hard as you can.
  • Haute Cuisine Is Weird: The party Liz attends with Gray serves flavored oxygen as hors d'oeuvres.
  • Hidden Depths: Kenneth turns out to be a natural at pitching television shows, although as we find out with Gold Case, he needs some practice with the execution.
  • Humble Hero: Kenneth works a menial job with a smile, and has no ambitions to move up; so long as he's working in television, he's happy. Even when he's pitching his idea for a show to network executives, all he asks in return is to become the head of the page program and a new clock radio. After some advice from Jack, he rattles off a sophisticated list of demands...and a new clock radio.
  • Kissing Cousins: Gray seems like the perfect guy for Liz, until she sees a picture of her great aunt at his penthouse and finds out that she was his great aunt, too.
  • Nice to the Waiter: The cast of TGS (and, it's implied, the rest of the NBC talent) is decidedly not nice to the pages in this episode, which makes Jack all the more confused about why Kenneth is content to stay where he is.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Liz and Jenna fixate on a pair of executives, who they nickname "The Head" and "The Hair". We learn that "The Hair" is named Gray (and he only knew Liz as "Glasses"); we never get "The Head"'s name.
  • Playing Sick: Gray convinces Liz to do this so they can go watch a movie together. Liz calls in and pretends to be sick on the phone, only to see Jack standing near her...before he gives her the rest of the day off anyway.
  • Stylistic Suck: Tracy Jordan's Christmas music.
  • Trash of the Titans: Brian Williams' dressing room is an unholy mess, and Kenneth and Jack have to clean it.
