Season One, Episode Five

Rick and Michonne find themselves with an unwelcome pursuer.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Rick and Michonne ultimately come to pity Jadis upon her demise, though Michonne ultimately is harder on her than Rick.
  • Amicable Exes: Gabriel is happy to see Jadis despite their less than graceful breakup. He continues to be her friend and confidante when she comes to see him. He eventually shows that he still has feelings for her, and she hasn’t stopped loving him.
  • Berserk Button: Rick catches on to how much Jadis hates being called "Anne".
  • Bullying a Dragon: Red challenges two hardened survivors who just saved his family’s asses. Rick and Michonne quickly pay them back in kind and only avoid killing them due to his wife protesting their actions.
  • The Bus Came Back: Father Gabriel Stokes makes an unexpected return.
  • Character Death: Jadis is bitten by a walker on the neck and eventually is put down by Rick.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Rick and Michonne reminisce about the day that Michonne requested toothpaste and Rick tried his hardest to acquiesce in Season 6’s "The Next World", which saw them have their Relationship Upgrade.
    • Rick says Michonne was the best friend of his son. Carl’s last words in Season 8's "Honor" to Michonne were calling her his best friend.
    • Rick says their luck is holding out, recalling his declaration that "luck runs out" in the Season 5 finale "Conquer".
    • The first flashback ("Three Years Ago") has Gabriel recalling when he was using Eugene’s radio. This places the sequence before Season 9’s "Who You Are Now?” where Eugene was shown to be actively working on it, and during the second timeskip of the season.
    • Gabriel believes he is catching up Jadis up on Rick’s apparent death in Season 9’s "What Comes After". Jadis later references the title of the episode.
    • Jadis remembers her old saying "we take, we don’t bother", first said in Season 7’s "New Best Friends".
    • The second flashback ("Two Years Ago") sees Gabriel tell Jadis that Michonne is away helping people, placing the scene after "What We Become". In "A Certain Doom", this was revealed to be the cover story Judith gave to Daryl and the Coalition. Furthermore, Gabriel tells Jadis of the poor state Alexandria is in after the Whisperer War following the devastation inflicted to the town offscreen in Season 10’s "The Tower", that was later shown in "Home Sweet Home".
    • The third and final flashback ("One Year Ago") shows Gabriel willing to kiss Jadis, placing it during Season 10C when he had already broken up with Rosita offscreen.
    • Jadis tries to assure Gabriel that her remorse is real. In Season 8’s "The Lost and the Plunderers", Simon began massacring the Scavengers when she gave a shitty, fake promise that she felt remorse after briefly joining Rick’s side in "Time for After".
    • Jadis flashes back to all her time on the franchise, including her time on World Beyond.
  • A Death in the Limelight: The episode heavily revolves around Jadis who dies by the end of it.
  • Here We Go Again!: When Red has a rant about how you should only care about yourself, Rick and Michonne are pretty annoyed since this is a pretty bog-standard motive rant they’ve encountered many times during the franchise (let alone other characters besides them).
  • It's All About Me: Jadis seems to genuinely not want Alexandria to have to be wiped out, but it soon becomes clear she’s also after Rick and Michonne to cover her own ass since her connection to the place and keeping it covered up would be unearthed, putting her in the line of fire.
  • Mercy Kill: Rick shoots Jadis in the head to put her down.
  • Never Found the Body: Jadis says she was suspicious of how Rick and Michonne disappeared simultaneously which led her to dig further.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jadis said she followed bread crumbs like the noodle wrappers discarded by Rick and Michonne that helped her confirm they survived and were heading home.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Rick and Michonne rip into Jadis for being a selfish, power hungry prick who ruined their lives.
  • Spotting the Thread: Gabriel notices that Jadis calls Michonne Rick’s wife. While he doesn’t pry further, it’s a sign that she knows more than she’s letting on about him.
  • Tempting Fate: The opening of the episode sees Rick and Michonne seeing a good turn of luck finding food and enjoying each other’s company like they’re on a peaceful road trip.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Red’s wife was the only one who refused to attack Rick and Michonne and she’s the first one to be eaten by walkers.
  • Villain Respect: Jadis openly says again that she respects Rick and Michonne.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: Ultimately Jadis admits that it wasn’t, committing to the CRM.
  • Wham Shot: The hooded figure in the intro being revealed to be Father Gabriel Stokes.
