Season 1, Episode 2

Michonne meets new friends during her journey after leaving the Coalition.

  • Ax-Crazy: The CRM are in fine form, whipping around the moment they see Michonne’s group to gas them to hell.
  • Back for the Dead: Bailey and Aiden return only to be quickly killed off by the CRM.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Nat, Bailey, and Aiden’s group rescues Michonne by diverting the horde when she seemed sure to have to face it.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Rick and Michonne do not disappoint.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Nor do they disappoint on this front.
  • Bring It: Even when forced to pretend to be held at gunpoint by Rick, Michonne is so rejuvenated by finding him that she smiles eagerly when the CRM arrives for them.
  • The Bus Came Back: The people Michonne rescued at the end of "What We Become" return.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • We return to the aftermath of "What We Become", as well as the epilogue of "Rest in Peace". Nat tells Michonne that she’s about to get out of radio range of Virginia, as Michonne mentioned in the latter episode. She later finds the spot where Rick was recaptured.
    • Michonne tells the group offscreen the circumstances of Rick’s apparent death in "What Comes After".
    • Jadis watches footage of Michonne’s opening interrogation like how Deanna Monroe watched footage of the group’s screening back in Season 5; as well as when Gabriel watched footage of Dante’s screening back in "The World Before".
    • Jadis tells Rick she doesn’t want to kill people from the Coalition she likes, referring to at least Gabriel, her ex-lover, who she left behind in "The Obliged". She took his last name as her surname when she joined the CRM.
    • Jadis says "yes, yes, yes", in reference to when she told Brion to take Rick "up, up, up" in Season 7's "New Best Friends".
  • Character Death: Aiden, Bailey, and Nat, as well as their other fellow defectors, are all dead by the end of the episode.
  • Defector from Decadence: Nat’s group and several others are convinced to leave the caravan by Michonne.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The group getting wiped out by the gas is enough to convince Aiden and Nat to tell Michonne to just return home.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: Jadis warns Rick that if he and Michonne try to escape, she’ll see to it that the Coalition is destroyed.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Bailey and Aiden return after their cameo at the end of "What We Become" and are set up as important new characters, but are quickly killed off.
  • Exact Words: Some of Michonne’s cover story laces in some truth to help her performance. She did originally come from Georgia where she was with her boyfriend, the long-dead Andre.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Jadis spends the ending of the episode giving Rick a long, courteous speech about how she doesn’t want to destroy the Coalition, but as she’s a loyal CRM leader it’s hardly the comfort she thinks it is.
  • Heroic BSoD: Michonne has a bad bout of it after finding the burned bodies where Rick was recaptured. She even agrees to simply return to Alexandria with Nat, deciding that and her brush with death from chlorine gas is just too much risk to her life and for the sake of her children.
  • He's Back!: Both Rick and Michonne are revived by finding each other. Rick had just told Okafor he was ready to commit to his reformist group, having lost faith in escaping, but is now plotting to escape with Michonne, who is also not afraid of the CRM apprehending her.
  • How We Got Here: On two fronts. We clarify the ending of "Rest in Peace", and also see events leading up to the end of last episode.
  • I Have Your Wife: Jadis follows up on Okafor and Thorne’s implied threats by explicitly warning Rick that an escape attempt will result in the Coalition’s annihilation.
  • It Can Think: The gas walker is a variant who ignores the distraction created by Michonne and continues heading for her.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em:
    • Nat says you have to know when to give up, as he tries to convince Michonne to give up and go home.
    • Even after being revitalized by finding Michonne, Rick insists that they could never take down the CRM due to how powerful they are. This rattles Michonne as she’s used to Rick being prepared to take on anything.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Michonne doesn’t tell Rick about RJ, promising to tell him "the rest" once they get home.
  • Mauve Shirt: Aiden and Bailey get a little characterization as decent people and expecting parents but are quickly killed off. Nat gets more characterization but he dies right after Michonne finds Rick.
  • Not Using the "Z" Word: The new group calls walkers "the Wailing". Rick actually asks Michonne to not call them walkers since that’s what he called them and it would betray she’s from Alexandria.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Much of the ending of "Rest in Peace" is finally clarified. Michonne gained the armor and horse from Nat's group and was facing a known and avoided massive horde they were trying to avoid.
  • Pet the Dog: Jadis seems genuinely concerned for the fate of the Coalition and asks Rick to not force her and the CRM to wipe them out.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Upon seeing a CRM helicopter, Michonne and Nat are eager to bring it down to get some payback for their lost friends.
  • Sixth Ranger: Michonne invites Nat, Aiden, and Bailey and their friends to join the Coalition, though it doesn’t work out, to say the least.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • The gas walker turns out to be a variant who ignores Michonne's initial bomb, and ruins her attempt to divert the horde until Nat's group arrives.
    • Jadis is the only person who previously lived in the Coalition who knows the truth about Michonne, putting a massive dent in their escape prospects.
  • Time Skip: Michonne and Nat are forced to spend an entire year recovering from the chlorine gas. The "Now" takes place roughly simultaneously with the final episodes of The Walking Dead.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Nat is revealed to be responsible for killing the well-meaning Okafor.
  • Wham Shot: Jadis is shown to be waiting in Rick’s apartment, which is alarming for the audience as they know she’s the only person who knows Michonne and that her cover story is a lie.
