Recap / The Unexpectables E 1

Go To

"Far off to the western reach, beyond Great Olean Sea, lies a city perched atop a great, unexplored land: the City of Alavast. A city built of explorers, warriors, and those wishing for a life of research and adventure. For all the splendors the city has to offer, the only way to be part of the city is to provide to the city, and so, our heroes, Task the Kobold Ranger, Greckles the Kenku Rogue, Borky the Orc Barbarian, and Panic Hellscream note  the Tiefling Bard, make their way to the fabled city, camping out in the outer-wall Tent Town, until a job passed them by. John Fleetfinger, a local Halfling farmer, hired the four adventurers to handle an imposing force of wolves, and the pack leader: a horrifying Death Dog with a taste for blood. After dispatching the wolves, tending to their wounds, setting an ambush, and clucking like chickens for a solid few minutes, the party succeeded in slaying the foul beast. Searching through the creature's resting place, the party came across the corpse of a previous adventurer who'd failed in their mission, a bronze and topaz necklace, some gold coins, and a magic cabbage. After stabbing the magic cabbage, hitting the magic cabbage, and biting the magic cabbage, to which Borky lost a tooth, the party returned to their employer, and received their agreed payment: 4 Abacus tickets. But, what are the Abacus tickets? What was the nature of the beast they had slain? And where did the magic come from? Well, we're going to find out."
Montyglu, introducing the group and how they came together

Original Airdate (Twitch): May 31, 2017:

Our party of heroes is introduced and invited into the city for a job from Abacus Fleetfinger, a Halfling accountant with a no-nonsense attitude, and a short temper. She instructs the party to head towards Wolf's Den in the west in order to help Peyton Black investigate a thief who caused "irreplaceable damage". The Unexpectables accept, but are unable to leave before Borky tests her patience one too many times and transforms him into a turtle. Upon being given their orders, and a limited amount of time to gather their supplies, the party becomes aware of an attack in an alleyway and dispatch the attacker, saving Willow, a Human Wizard from Eltmur. Once their supplies have been gathered, the party is once again locked out of the city, and find themselves heading westward towards the village of Wolf's Den, dispatching a mountain lion that ambushed them on the trail. Upon reaching Wolf's Den, they find it seemingly empty, and almost ambushed by the town, they find the problem they were hired to take care of: Peyton's daughter Colette was kidnapped by a lumbering, seemingly animalistic and puppeteered giant after fighting Peyton to submission. The Party adventures forth with Peyton's request to retrieve his daughter and warn Everbright and Dragon's Take, the next two villages in the direction the giant wandered to.

"You are not what I expected..."

  • Damsel in Distress:
    • Willow, needing rescuing from an attack in an alleyway.
    • Colette Black as well, being kidnapped from Wolf's Den by a giant.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • The party is very green around each other and so takes a bit to get into the swing of things.
    • Borky's Morning Ritual goes a little different, yet still has the bellowing yell at the end.
  • Forced Transformation: Borky ends up on the recieving end of this when he pushes Abacus' buttons one too many times. He spends the whole first fight as a turtle, nearly crushing Panic when he reverts back.
  • Foreshadowing: Abacus mentions a fight between two mages, one of which named Artimus.
  • In Medias Res: The party is mentioned to have completed a job previously that we are not privy to detail-wise.
  • Noodle Incident: We never really get to figure out what the ambush was about, or why they had to cluck like chickens for a few minutes.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • The party quickly retreats from Abacus' tower once she turns Borky into a turtle.
    • The attacker attempts this upon surrendering, earning a few swings from the crew and a cold-clock from Willow.
  • Wretched Hive: Tent Town is considered as this.
  • You All Meet in an Inn: Subverted - the party is introduced walking into a bar after completing their first mission for John Fleetfinger.
