Return to Recap: The Smurfs (1981).
Since Gargamel's gold-making formula calls for six Smurfs, he invents a machine that makes five copies of anything. He uses it on the most annoying Smurf in the village: Brainy.
This episode provides examples of:
- Cloning Gambit: Gargamel, tired of having to catch six Smurfs to make gold, invents a machine that turns one Smurf into six Smurfs.
- Me's a Crowd: Gargamel falls victim to his machine but soon sees the value of having six of him: they would only have to catch one Smurf apiece to make gold. The six Gargamels begin mixing a formula to make a thousand of them, but the spell goes awry when they add six times as much dragon's breath as the recipe calls for.Gargamel #1: [putting in a teaspoonful of dragon's breath] You have to be very careful with this dragon's breath.
Gargamel #2: [putting in another teaspoonful] I know that, you ninny!
Gargamel #3: [putting in another teaspoonful] Who do you think invented this?
Gargamel #4: [putting in another teaspoonful] You have to add exactly the right amount.
Gargamel #5: [putting in another teaspoonful] One measure teaspoon...
Gargamel #6: [putting in another teaspoonful] ...exactly!
[A Beat as the six Gargamels stare with an Oh, Crap! expression at the cauldron.]
All Six Gargamels: OH, NO!
[Brainy and Papa Smurf watch from a distance as a massive explosion ensues from Gargamel's hovel. When the smoke has cleared, only one Gargamel remains.]
Gargamel: [rubbing his head] Ohhh, I'll never dabble in duplication again. One explosion like this is enough. [He sees multiple images of Azrael's face floating before his eyes.] Oh, no!
