Recap / The Smurfs 1981 S 1 E 21 The Fake Smurf

Go To

An Animated Adaptation of The Smurfs comic book story of the same name, with Hogatha taking the place of Gargamel.

In the story, Hogatha wishes to get revenge on the Smurfs for destroying her magic locket in "Bewitched, Bothered, And Be-Smurfed", which cost her one of her nine lives, so she brews up a potion that will change her into a Smurf, albeit a male Smurf. After swallowing the completed formula, Hogatha checks to see her transformation and realizes that it isn't completely perfect—the one thing she lacks is a tail. Taking a dried pea from the table and painting it blue before putting a spot of glue on it, Hogatha creates a tail for herself and then heads out into the forest to find a Smurf that will take her into the Smurf Village. As luck would have it, Hogatha finds Vanity near a sarsaparilla patch. He offers her a sarsaparilla leaf, which tastes disgusting to her.

Hogatha follows Vanity into the village, where all the rest of the Smurfs are about to perform a dance. Hogatha tries to go her own separate way but is told by Papa Smurf to join the dance. However, Hogatha finds herself unable to follow along and messes up everything, and Papa Smurf tells her to go somewhere else. Glad that at least her cover wasn't blown, Hogatha goes into a Smurf's house and sees something boiling in the kettle. Thinking it to be soup, she puts a little poison root in it, hoping that the Smurfs will eat the soup with the poison and die from it. But during the meal, where she sits and watches the other Smurfs eat hearty, Hogatha sees that they're not affected by the soup, and so goes back to the house with the boiling kettle and finds out that it's full of nothing but dirty laundry.

Hogatha tries another method for doing in the Smurfs: with the completion of the suspension bridge over the River Smurf, she plants Jokey's "surprise" packages underneath the bridge and waits for the Smurfs to begin crossing it so that she can blow them up. The explosions don't go off until she starts across the bridge, and she ends up falling into the river, crying out for help. After the Smurfs rescue her, Papa Smurf sees that someone has sabotaged the bridge and tells his little Smurfs that there's "a smurf among us". Fearing that she will be found out, Hogatha slips away from the others. Unknown to her, her tail falls off, which is discovered by Clumsy and brought to Papa Smurf's attention.

Papa Smurf then calls his little Smurfs together again to warn them of a "fake Smurf" on the loose. Hogatha realizes at this point that part of her masquerade is gone and flees into Papa Smurf's laboratory to make a potion that will restore her true form so she can squash the village flat. Several Smurfs get a battering ram to break down the door so they can stop Hogatha, but it is too late: she swallows the completed formula and transforms back into her old appearance. To her shock, she is the size of the Smurfs. Unable to cast a spell to defend herself, Hogatha is captured by the Smurfs and brought out to the village limits, where Papa Smurf sets her free, warning her to never set foot in the village again.

Tropes associated with this episode include:

  • Ate the Spoon: The potion Hogatha created for changing herself into a Smurf was so powerful that it dissolved the spoon.
  • Battering Ram: Used to break down the door to Papa Smurf's lab when Hogatha is in it.
  • Call-Back: To "Bewitched, Bothered, And Be-Smurfed".
  • Delayed Explosion: Hogatha attempts to destroy the Smurfs by sabotaging the bridge with Jokey's "surprises", but instead of exploding when she pulls the trigger at the moment the Smurfs are crossing the bridge, they end up going off when Hogatha herself starts across, sending her plummeting into the river.
  • Freudian Slip: Hogatha makes one when Greedy tries to get her to eat the soup.
Greedy: [holding out a spoon] Now, open wide...
Hogatha: No, please! I'm on a low-poison diet.
  • Gender Bender: The female Hogatha becomes a male Smurf.
  • Gender Flip: The main antagonist is switched from male to female in this adaptation.
  • Go and Sin No More: Hogatha pleads for mercy when it looks like Papa Smurf is going to kill her. Like in the original story, Papa Smurf spares her and tells her to go and let what has been done to her be a reminder to amend her ways.
  • I Can't Dance: Hogatha, on arriving at the village, is told to join the celebratory dance all the rest of the Smurfs are doing. She reluctantly joins in but keeps falling out of rhythm and ends up accidentally knocking down the other dancers.
  • Impostor Forgot One Detail: Double subverted. When Hogatha first transforms herself, she is dismayed to see that she's become a Smurf without a tail. She makes one by painting a dried pea blue and gluing it to the back of her pants. Later, unknown to her, her tail falls off and is found by Clumsy. Clumsy shows the pea to Papa Smurf, who warns the others of the impostor, and the fake Smurf is soon spotted.
  • Meaningful Rename: The other Smurfs call Hogatha's Smurf impersonation Snorty Smurf due to her Verbal Tic of snorting like a pig.
  • Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony: Papa Smurf does this with the newly-completed bridge.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Attempted by Hogatha and failed. She thought she was putting the poison root into soup, but it turned out to be dirty laundry.
  • Tipped Off by the Tail: An inverted example. Clumsy's showing Hogatha's tail to Papa Smurf is what alerts him to the fact that there's a fake Smurf among them. Immediately afterward, when the Smurfs are checking each other's tails, Hefty demands to see Hogatha's. She flees, trying to hide among other Smurfs, but Hefty immediately notices the lack of a tail.
Hefty: Hey, stop! It's the fake Smurf!
  • Trash the Set: Hogatha's final plan as a fake Smurf is to burn the village to the ground, but she gets found out before she can put that plan into motion.
  • Verbal Backspace: When Vanity offers Hogatha a sarsaparilla leaf...
Hogatha: Oh... uh... yes, sure. [She takes a taste, then makes a disgusted face.] This is terrible... uh... terribly good, that is!
