Recap / The Simpsons S 30 E 6 From Russia Without Love

Go To

When Moe unwittingly reverses one of Bart's prank call against him, Bart, Milhouse and Nelson conspire to go on to the dark web for the ultimate prank against Moe... buying him a Mail-Order Bride. As it turns out, Moe and the Russian Anastasia get along great, but his own insecurities threaten what could be a great contractual relationship.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: While Bart is undergoing a series of punishments, we see him looking disgusted as he changes a diaper. It turns out not to be Maggie's but Abe's.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Anastasia.
  • Continuity Nod: Moe brings up his previous girlfriends, Maya and Laney.
  • Dance Party Ending: Subverted. DJ Kirk's equipment bursts into flames just as Duffman orders the party to get started.
  • Disproportionate Retribution : When Moe doesn't respond to the boys' usual prank phone calls, they decide to mess with him in a more elaborate way, going on the Dark Web and ordering him a mail order bride.
  • Easily Forgiven: Moe is unbothered when Homer tells him that Bart was the one who sent him the mail-order bride.
  • Fauxreigner: Anastasia, a scammer from Ohio who's faking the Russian accent.
  • For the Evulz: When Bart says that they have to get back at Moe, Millhouse asks what Moe did to them to warrant such actions. Bart just says that it doesn't matter, showing that Moe didn't do anything to them and he wanted to mess with him just because.
  • Funny Background Event: After heading out to console Moe and leaving Bart alone in the kitchen with an angry Marge, Homer runs around to the backyard and thumbs his nose at Bart through the kitchen window.
  • Gold Digger: Anastasia is this, as she only wanted to marry Moe for money, dated Krusty the Clown and flirted with Groundkeeper Willie when she believed him to be rich.
  • Insulting from Behind the Language Barrier: When Moe reveals his previous heartbreaks to her, Anastasia feigns sympathy but then insults him in Russian, calling him "Nightmare Face."
  • The Joy of X: The episode make use of the From X with(out) Love naming pattern.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Bart gets hit with it twice. First, after 30 seasons, he finally has Moe turn one of his prank calls back on him. Later, when Homer and Marge get him to confess that he ordered Moe's mail-order bride and Homer runs to Moe's to "comfort" him, Bart, now left with the nicer of his two parents, asks, "No punishment, right?" Marge promptly dunks the phone she was holding over the sink to get a confession out of him straight into the water, then forces him to write lines on the driveway (making him redo all his work when it's washed away by the rain) and change Abe's diaper.
  • Mail-Order Bride: The plot is that Bart orders Moe a mail order bride from Russia.
  • Opening Shout-Out: Marge forces Bart to enact his standard Writing Lines punishment on the driveway.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Discussed by the family.
Marge: Maybe this will turn out great for Moe. Sometimes arranged marriages are the best! I mean, look at Tevye and Golde! They had a wonderful life with that fiddler in the shtetl!
Lisa: Wasn't that great for Tzeitel.
Homer: Ugh! How many times do I have to tell you that Lazar Wolf the butcher was a good provider?!
  • Perp Sweating: Homer decides to interrogate Bart with a high-power flashlight. When Marge walks in, Bart thinks he's been spared this experience...until she hands Homer a higher-powered flashlight and turns the lights back off.
  • Pet the Dog: Bart concocts a very Disproportionate Retribution against Moe by sending him a mail-order bride, but it's also Bart who saves him from being scammed by the same bride when they decide to go through with the wedding and he figures out what their "marital" paperwork entails.
  • Running Gag Stumbles: Moe finally turns the tables.
Bart: Uh, hello, I'm looking for a Mr. Buttface, first name "Ima"?
Moe: "Ima"? Nobody's been named that in, like, a hundred years. And as for the rest, why don't you double-check that name, eh? Try saying it out loud.
    Bart: "Ima Buttface"?
(Milhouse and Nelson laugh at him)
Moe: Mistakes are how we learn there, young fella. Good luck in your, uh...your journey into adulthood.
  • Tacky Tuxedo: Marge justifies forcing Bart to wear one of these to Moe's wedding by saying it's the last of his punishments, though she also admits that she thinks it makes him look cute.
  • Writing Lines: Marge punishes Bart by making him write "I will not order pregnant rats" on the driveway. When the rain washes it away, she makes him start over.
