Nolan gets a new training officer, Detective Nyla Harper, and they don't really get along. Harper first introduces herself as a waitress and attempts to feel him out before being disappointed in his answers. She also explains that she has no interest in training him and is actually here for the 5% pay increase as a TO. Nolan finds her uninterested in anything but hardcore felonies as well.
Lopez meets a homeless woman and decides to help her, finding her being harrassed by two boys trying to drive her out of the neighborhood. Bradford, meanwhile, attempts to find the perfect gift for his girlfriend even as Lucy points out all of his ideas are things he would enjoy.
- Consummate Liar: Nolan accuses Harper of being this.
- Establishing Character Moment: Harper pretends to be a waitress who talks Nolan up when she first meets him, and then gives him a talk about warriors and guardians.
- Freudian Excuse: Harper spend for years as an undercover cop under constant threat of death.
- Master of Disguise: Harper demonstrates this ability as she has skills that allow her to instantly impersonate a junkie among other identities.
- Missing Mom: Harper has a little daughter she can't see without supervision, and apparently hasn't seen in a while, probably because she used to disappear for months on undercover work.
- Moral Myopia: Harper seems to have missed that the police are, by definition, meant to be guardians versus warriors.
- Protagonist-Centered Morality: Harper views warriors as superior to Guardians and her questions all would be whether Nolan should be a Glory Seeker Rabid Cop. Except, she views the fact he is not one of those things as a flaw.
- Title Drop: Harper gives Nolan a speech about warriors and guardians.
