Recap / The Return To Gravity Falls S 3 E 17 The Rising Grasp

Go To

PART 1:note

A bus with more than its fair share of damage parks in Chicago, an equally beaten up teen with a guitar case gratefully climbing out. The driver and other four passengers follow the teen out, the only one without bruises a figure in a black cloak and silver mask. Rin, Drew, Rushtar, Nadan and Maureen all stretch their legs and share their concern following the fight they have just come from, saying Graupner's new fanatics are a problem. The Guardsman pulls out a cell phone and separates from his students as Rin informs the others that the death count from Niagara is 17 counting Montana. The weight of this, combined with the number of lives that were lost in Mississippi during their fight, crashes down on them, Maureen wishing for some real superheroes. Nadan says that he heard that Paris has been effected by the Stone disappearing more than other places, resulting in a rock monster and a couple superheroes running around the city.

Drew says Graupner and the Rising Grasp are worse, the Guardsman confirming this as he rejoins the group. He says that Graupner is officially a mass-murderer, having burnt over a dozen police in Niagara to death. He says that the National Guard is mobilizing but tells his students to not expect any lasting help as Graupner can't be killed. He says that Graupner will burn everything with green fire, admitting that he has never seen green flame before. He also says that the thing Graupner did to awaken an unconscious cultist is something powerful that he has only seen a handful of times, meaning Graupner is getting more powerful quickly. He says that they need to move faster than ever to stifle the return of magic and stop Graupner and other people like him from emerging. Saying that he is more than willing to die to save the world, the Guardsman tells his students they are going to the Gold Meridian hotel to meet with some important people.

In a suite in the Gold Meridian, TV reporters are talking about what happened in Niagara. They says that the National Guard is monitoring highways and the there is a Pentagon meeting scheduled for later that day. Ford turns off the TV and looks at the others, Wendy standing at the window, Soos and Dipper on the couch, Mabel in the kitchen, all of them depressed. Ford tries to lighten the mood and offers to make omelets, but there are no eggs in the fridge, Soos becoming more upset at this news.

Ford tells everyone not to loose hope, telling them that feeling bad won't help anything, especially when they still have a job to do. Mabel's response is to flop on the couch and enter Sweatertown as Soos says he can't help but feel terrible. Ford says he knows this, Dipper pointedly asking if he really does, saying that the old Ford only cared about the results, adding that his 'still have a job to do' thing sounds a lot like the old Ford. Ford says that he does care about more than the result, accusing Dipper of still not trusting him and holding what happened three years ago- which he still doesn't fully understand- over his head for no reason.

Mabel yells for them to stop yelling at each other, telling Dipper that he's allowed to feel sad but not allowed to not give this Ford a chance to prove himself and continue living in the past. She then turns to Ford and asks how he could feel as bad as they feel for someone they asked to help them being killed because of them. Ford says that he could have kept his family together, admitting that he could have stopped his father from kicking Stan out of the family all those years ago. He says that the family fell apart after Stan was thrown out, so hearing from Stan back when he was writing the Journals was the best day of his life. He admits that he didn't listen to Stan when Stan found out about Bill and says that he has always been too caught up in his own pain to make things better, telling everyone that he has made his fair share of mistakes that hurt others.

Soos hugs Ford as Dipper apologizes to him, everyone feeling a little better and being a bit closer. Soos asks Dipper what Zander said to do next, Dipper saying that their orders are to hold up and wait for Zander to arrive. Wendy asks if there's anything else they need to do, saying that she's ready to get into the business of saving people after everything that has happened with the Devil and Montana. Mabel pinches Wendy for luck, saying that she'll become a real superhero one day. Wendy says her hero name would be Red Phantom, everyone telling Ford about them playing his cursed Strongholds and Serpents game and Wendy's character being an archer or something.

A voice from the doorway says that archer superheroes would be cool, the Guardsman and his students entering the room. Drew rushes to the couch and practically melts into it while Rushtar heads to the freezer to get some ice, telling them things have been terrible when Mabel asks how they're all doing. The Guardsman says it's been a bumpy road and he wants everyone to get some rest before they start heading west again. The twins ask about their parents, the Guardsman assuring them they are fine in a safe house in Wyoming.

Ford interrupts and asks to know who everyone is, the Guardsman being the only one he has met so far. The Guardsman introduces teenaged Drew Alto, red-head Maureen "The Menace" Brennan, black-haired Rin Goda, dark-skinned Nadan Imani, and pale Darren "Rushtar" Roughton, Mabel fangirling over him and Maureen. Mabel asks the Guardsman how traveling with his students has been, but he says that he wasn't always traveling with them, instead working on the second part of their plan- making a second Stone. He says that the spell for making the first was never recorded, Dipper getting scared until Ford says that a spell that powerful would leave some trace behind. The Guardsman says that that trace is what caused Gravity Falls to be so weird, but with the town and Stone gone, they only have a trace of the trace.

Luckily, Ford's tech has helped the Guardsman make a device, which is now almost ready. Ford shouts about how the Guardsman had access to his tech, Wendy leaving the room with the request that she be told when people stop shouting. The Guardsman says that he used search engines for published material and the material he found, when combined with magical theory and with the assistance of a young scientist/engineer that owes the Guardsman a favor, something called a Source-Inductor will be ready in a few days. Ford reacts to this, he and the Guardsman explaining to a confused everyone else that the 'Source' is supposedly the place where universes interact with each other, and the Source-Inductor was a machine Ford theorized could reach into the Source and pull out something, like the spell that was used to make the Stone, which is what the Guardsman plans on using it for...

...assuming the box they got from the Devil contains enough Starkissed. Everyone gathers around the box, Mabel putting the key in the lock and taking the lid off. Everyone glances to the Guardsman, who confirms that the fifteen golfball-sized spheres of Starkissed will be enough to do what needs to be done. He re-locks the box and compliments everyone on what they have done, Mabel getting emotional when the Guardsman tells her Arline would have been proud of her. The Guardsman says that they probably have time to relax for the day without having to worry about Graupner, telling everyone that they'll head to the safehouse tomorrow morning to meet up with the twins' parents and a few other familiar faces before driving to the Source-Inductor.

Mabel starts to get a card game going, Dipper and the Guardsman the only ones not joining her when Dipper realizes Wendy hasn't come back yet. The Guardsman says that she's probably overwhelmed and jealous from spending so much time with people who can eat and drink and sleep. Dipper asks why he knows so much about wraiths, The Guardsman mentioning a story that got turned into the song The Shadow of the Alps, saying that it's not just about a wight. He tells Dipper the difference between a wight and a wraith is that the former is controlled by someone util their controller dies and they become the latter. He says that the real meaning of the song is the dangers of loneliness and taking everything away from some who at one point had nothing. He admits that he wrote the song before telling Dipper to go check on Wendy if she doesn't come back in a few minutes.

Wendy has just stepped out of the elevator and into the upper lobby, alone except for a guy reading a magazine. She looks through the windows, the city below reminding her of her family- strong and always ready for a fight. She closes her eyes, but the curse begins quickly, forcing her eyes open to end the feeling of drowning. She sees something silver and blue and maybe triangular, but it disappears before she can get a good look at it, Wendy leaning against the window for support.

The guy with the magazine asks if she's okay, guessing Wendy isn't from the area. None of Wendy's wraith-senses tell her the guy is dangerous, and although her instincts are saying something is off, she tells him she's from Oregon. The guy says he's from Los Angeles, the two shaking hands as the guy introduces himself as Alvis, Wendy giving her name in turn. Alvis says he's in Chicago for business before commenting that Wendy looks exhausted, Wendy admitting that she doesn't get much sleep anymore before deciding that lying to a stranger is pointless.

Although she never says Graupner's name, she tells Alvis that she blames herself for being around and inspiring Graupner to become a wraith, thus causing most of the problems they are now facing. Alvis apologizes for her looking down on herself so much, assuring her that she is a good person by saying that a good person making a choice can change the world. He says that he made a choice to try and stop a problem, telling her that the problem is still going on, but he knows that, had he not chosen how he did, the problem would be a million times worse that it currently is. He tells her that a single moment is all it takes to change the world before looking at his watch and saying he has to get back to the office, rambling a bit about how they are working even though the building is still being worked on before taking the elevator upstairs.

Wendy debates Alvis' words, eventually realizing that Dipper is the key to everything. She walks back to the elevator, but freezes when she sees that Graupner is about to step off. Wendy jumps and kicks him in the face, but it does nothing lasting as he magically stops the elevator from working and locks all the doors. Wendy attacks and punches him repeatedly before throwing him across the room, but he says HALT and is able to immobilize her before she can attack again. He allows her mouth to move so they can talk, although he does most of the speaking by offering her a deal- if she comes with him willingly, he'll leave her friends alone.

PART 2:note

Dipper begins fidgeting with the spine of one of the Journals, starting to become concerned that Wendy has yet to return. Mabel and Soos are telling the Paths students about the blue cylinders, the robots, and the aliens, Dipper occasionally helping explain the science. Mabel perks everyone up when the mood starts to turn sour at the mention of Yuki's disappearance, Dipper beginning to stare at the door as the uneasy feeling in his gut grows.

The Guardsman startles Dipper out of his staring, the two of them commenting on the oddness of Dipper's instincts impacting him so much. Zander encourages him to listen to his gut, the two of them walking out of the suite when Dipper admits he feels something isn't right. Zander admits he has come to trust both Dipper's and Mabel's instincts, Dipper admitting that, while he doesn't find Zander trustworthy, he would never willingly put them in danger.

Dipper hits the button for the elevator, Zander's posture becoming rigid after several seconds. He hits the buttons again before stating that the elevator isn't moving. He tells Dipper to try the stairway, but the door refuses to open. Zander says his sense tell him magic is somehow involved, the two of them rushing back to the suite.

The Guardsman tells everyone to leave immediately, Soos grabbing the Starkissed as the Guardsman explains he thinks Graupner has help, which is why he is able to track the twins so well, a passing mention being made to the fortune teller from the Renaissance Fair. They all go back to the elevator, the students trying and failing to get the doors open. The Guardsman conjures his black shadow spear, stating that when there is a path readily available, Paths students are capable of making their own.

One floor down, Wendy asks Graupner why he wants her to come with him, Graupner countering by wanting to now how she became a wraith. She only says Dipper did not turn her into a wraith, Graupner admitting that he still needs to complete the phylactery ritual to turn into the lich he claims he is. Wendy guesses that that ritual is why he needs her, but Graupner tells her that beings of power such as themselves make perfect hosts to other being of immense power. He says that, since wraiths can't sleep, those beings can't make deals the way they normally do, which is why he needs her cooperation.

Just as Wendy is about to agree, a circle of the ceiling falls through, the Guardsman dropping down quickly afterwards. He grabs Graupner's arms, able to ensure the green fire does not hit anyone or damage the building too severely as the two wrestle. Sprinklers turn on as the Guardsman gets Graupner in a choke hold, throwing him out the window to land on the concrete below, freeing Wendy from the spell.

The Guardsman says they need to leave before they are trapped or the building is destroyed, Ford using a spell to override the elevator being shutdown when the sprinklers went off. The Guardsman sends his students down first to clear the way, Wendy admitting that Graupner wanted her to come with him, saying she doesn't know why but that he has a new spell that can stun her. Ford and the Guardsman explain that single-word spells, called power words, are incredibly difficult to master, meaning Graupner is gaining strength quickly and needs to be avoided at all costs.

The elevator returns, the six of them entering and going down to the main lobby. Gunshots can be heard, although they stop when the elevator is a couple of floors up. The Guardsman steps in front of everyone as the doors open, quickly disarming the suited man standing in front of the doors. He points his spear at the man but does not attack, everyone except Ford recognizing Agent Trigger from three years ago. Looking around, they see that the lobby is full of government agents, several guarding the Paths students, others monitoring the various news stations on the televisions, all under the direction of Agent Powers.

Stories are exchanged, Soos telling Ford that the agents who came to Gravity Falls three years ago had their memories wiped after Bill Cipher corrupted them, meaning Powers and Trigger don't really recognize anyone expect for the Guardsman. He and Powers explain that, after saving a young woman from death some 20 years ago, Powers wanted to lock him in The Federal Occult and Paranormal Investigations Bureau (Fopib), but the two came to an agreement; Powers sets him up with the means to a new life in exchange for the Guardsman persona going underground.

Powers says the Guardsman broke the arrangement and threatens to take him in, the Guardsman saying he doesn't have to answer to them. Ford suggests they work together, Zander agreeing that the 20 men the agents have with them won't be enough to stop Graupner. Powers insists they have things under control, but just then all the televisions turn to static before changing to the Rising Grasp's logo, one of the agents saying the same thing is being broadcasted to all of Chicago.

Graupner's voice comes through all the stations at once, warning the entire city that what happened in Niagara was just a teaser for the real power he will soon unleash on the world. He then says he is in Chicago for someone in particular, the logo being replaced by a picture of Wendy from when she was in the upper lobby earlier. As panic starts to set in, Graupner tells that city that if they bring Wendy to him, he and the Rising Grasp will leave.

Part 3:

Graupner continues by saying that, for every hour that goes by with Wendy not being brought to him, he will burn one building in the city to ashes. His transmission cuts out, a civilian almost instantly running up to Wendy to try and get her to turn herself in. Powers sends the man away, knowing the downward spiral that would occur if terrorist demands were met. He and the Guardsman unwillingly agree to work together to get Wendy and the others out of the city safely and back on the road west.

Everyone steps outside and starts walking towards the parking garage, the citizens of Chicago immediately taking notice of Wendy. A man comes up and tries to break through the line of government agents, Powers shoving him back and pulling out a pistol to keep him away. Another man rushes at Powers and tries to land a punch, but Powers knocks him out. This causes the rest of the civilians to begin to riot and attack, Wendy nearly having a panic attack as fighting breaks out on all sides.

Even a warning shot fired by Trigger does nothing to stop the mob from attacking, and while everyone is able to hold out, Dipper knows the number of people attacking them is growing every second, and they will not be able to escape with everyone knowing what Wendy looks like. He finally gets a second to think, his eyes catching Maureen's red hair as she takes out another attacker. He tells Wendy to give Maureen her shirt and jacket, Maureen taking them and pretending to be Wendy escaping the fight, the rest of the Paths student following after her and the mob on their tail.

Powers and Trigger leave to prepare an escort out of the city for everyone, Zander taking off his mask as they enter the parking garage. He tells a still shocked Wendy that she can't give in and that she needs to stop thinking about it, but Wendy just brushes past everyone and starts walking upstairs. They arrive at the level the cars are on, Wendy and Zander both beginning to look around anxiously. Zander orders everyone to get in the cars, drawing his staff and putting his mask back on as the other get the same feeling of being watched.

Cultists appear out of the shadows, firing rifle-like weapons at the gang. Zander uses his staff to prevent the laser-like projectiles from hitting their marks. He stays behind to fight the attacking cultists, the others getting into the cars and driving down to the crowded roads below, Dipper earning a missing side-mirror and a hole through his windshield in their escape. They slowly make their way to the highway, but coming down the on-ramp are black cars with the Rising Grasp's logo painted on them.

Dipper turns the car away from the highway, frustrated by his lack of knowledge of the city's layout. He and Mabel expertly switch places while the car is in motion, Mabel getting situated in the driver's seat just as a helicopter with Graupner hanging out the side begins to circle them fairly close to the ground. Dipper finds a wind spell in the Journal and uses it to shake up the helicopter, making it have to pull up and away from them to avoid crashing.

Dipper pulls out his phone and looks at a map of the city, the map showing that they have to turn around if they want to get on the highway west. Dipper suggests taking alleys to try and lose the Rising Grasp cars, but Mabel concerned about his car fitting through the narrow- knock knock. The twins turn to see the Guardsman hanging on to the side of the car. Dipper puts down the back window and the Guardsman slips in easily, telling them the government has a caravan together to help them get out of the city. Dipper mentions the cars following them, but the Guardsman assures him his students have it under control. The bus the Paths drove into the city on comes out of a side road, crashing into the lead vehicle of the Rising Grasp and leading the other cars away from their pursuit of the twins.

Zander tells Mabel how to get back to the highway, the government escort waiting for them there. Then they all hear a voice that sounds like it is coming from the radio, but Dipper's radio isn't on. Looking behind them, they see a garbage truck come crashing through the streets, a man preaching the beliefs of the Rising Grasp from the top and a dozen fanatic hanging on to the sides. Unwilling to get on the highway with the garbage truck around, the Guardsman tells the twins that he'll catch up, rolling out of the car and stepping in the path of the truck. He pulls out his staff and leaps clear over the truck, heaving the staff into the road as he does so. The truck crashes into the staff, everyone on the sides falling off and the entire front of the truck crumbling at the impact.

They continue towards the highway, five government vehicles and the bus of the Paths waiting for them at the on-ramp. Entering the empty highway, the vehicle containing Agent Trigger pulls up to the twins, telling them to turn on their radio so Powers can give them directions. His plan is cut short when a ball of green fire strikes another government car, everyone turning around to see Graupner's helicopter following them, Graupner slinging another ball of green flame at one of the government cars, the bus swerving to avoid collision.

Dipper scrambles for the Journal as Trigger pulls out a rather large handgun, the weapon doing nothing to prevent Graupner from taking out two more government cars. Dipper finds the lightning spell, using two bolts to hit the helicopter half a second after Powers and Trigger are run off the road. The helicopter falls, crashing to the highway in front of the twins. Mabel avoids the crashing chopper as Graupner climbs out of the wreck, summoning a ball of green flame. Dipper uses two more bolts of lightning to counter the green flame, the mixing of spells causing an explosion that throws Dipper's car into the air, landing on its roof and sliding to a stop.

The twins climb out of Dipper's wrecked car, Wendy, Ford and Soos running towards them as Graupner walks towards them, readying another ball of green flame. A honking from behind him causes his to turn, barely striking the bus of the Paths as it crashes into him. Graupner is thrown back as the bus crashes onto its side, the kids rushing to help the Paths students out. Ford and Soos take an unconscious Drew to the El Diablo as the others climb out of the bus, everyone turning at Graupner's voice.

Snapping his broken arm back into place, Graupner opens a portal using a spell, dozens of cultists armed with the laser rifles walking out of the mountain base on the other side. They take cover behind the bus, trying to plan a way to get away from being pinned down. The Paths students tell the kids to run while they fight, but the twins' objections are cut short when the cultists make their way around the bus, fighting breaking out on all fronts.

The seven of them hold their own, but fatigue is quickly setting in, and the number of cultists continue to grow. Dipper tells everyone that he will distract Graupner and to be prepared to run to the car and bike, knowing but not caring that they will be trying to get ten people in/on the vehicles. Dipper lines up the shot, but before he can use his last bolt of lightning, Graupner says FALL, Dipper being hit with a wave of dizziness. He tries desperately to throw the shot, but the bolt misses by inches as he collapses to the ground. Mabel and Wendy come up to him, Mabel slapping him in the face to get him to come to his senses.

The girls pull him to his feet, Graupner's laughing at them as he closes his portal. He calls his twenty cultists away from their fight with the Paths students, the four of them exhaustedly making their way over to Wendy and the twins as Graupner, now surrounded by twenty of his men, conjures a fireball the size of the Paths' bus. Before he can fire it, Wendy offers to give herself over to him, not wanting him to hurt anyone else for her sake. Graupner says that it's not enough, knowing the fireball wouldn't hurt Wendy any-

A black spear comes flying through the fireball, lodging itself in the ground in front of Wendy. Everyone else turns away as the fireball explodes, knocking the bus onto its roof and sending Graupner and his cultists flying. The Guardsman stands up from where he landed with his spear, telling Ford to use the repair spell he used on the elevator on Dipper's car. He then turns to Wendy and tells her that protecting those she loves is the best way for her to stay sane, collapsing his staff to the size of a rock and telling her to hold onto it for him.

The Guardsman walks towards Graupner as everyone else begins working on Dipper's car, he and Ford using the repair spell to fix the engine while Soos and the Paths students repair what they can manually. The Guardsman rushes and Graupner and punches him in the face hard enough to throw him back several feet, the cultists jumping in but doing almost nothing against the Guardsman's abilities. Not even Graupner's green flame does anything to deter him, the Guardsman managing to break loose a slab of concrete and have it fall on Graupner entirely.

Graupner breaks free of the concrete, the Guardsman attempting to get him to let go of his anger and stop fighting. Graupner refuses, telling the Guardsman that he doesn't know anything about him. The Guardsman says he does, apologizing for Omir Steindorf giving him to Archibald Kinley instead of putting him in an orphange with his sister and sending them to a better home. Graupner again says that he will not stop, turning his attention to where everyone is still doing repairs and hurling a fireball in their direction.

Mabel's attempt to punch the fireball away is stopped by the Guardsman rushing in front of her and catching the fireball, keeping it away from them. Graupner gives the order to fire, his cultists shooting their laser-rifles at the gang, who dives for cover. The Guardsman lifts the fireball and throws it back at Graupner, a laser blast hitting his masked face as he does, sending him stumbling back and causing the fireball to go off course.

Shards of silver littering the ground around him, Zander regains his footing and pulls off the rest of his destroyed mask, his students and Graupner shocked by the realization of who he really is. He promises he'll give his students a more detailed explanation later, pulling off his Guardsman cloak to use it against Graupner and the remaining cultists, whipping it at attackers between punches, buying everyone time to finish repairing Dipper's car.

Maureen and Rushtar head to the El Diablo and Wendy gets on Mabel's bike as Ford and Soos begin putting the finishing touches on Dipper's engine. Zander, running low on patience, disengages himself from the attacking cultists, putting the cloak back on his shoulders as he tells Graupner he's done playing around. Graupner again refuses to yield, Zander ducking behind the bus as the few remaining cultists fire on him. Zander glances back where the twins are watching him fight, telling them that what hes about to do isn't good. He then turns the upside-down bus back onto its side and, grabbing the belly of the bus, lifts it clear above his head and hurls it at cultists, Graupner using a spell to avoid the bus, but not acting fast enough to avoid Zander's follow-up attack.

Ford announces that the car is fixed, he and Soos racing for the El Diablo as Rin, Nadan, and the twins climb in. Mabel turns to watch Zander, stunned when she sees that his attacks have now begun to kill the cultists that come after him. Dipper turns the car on and begins to drive away, knowing that the sooner they leave, the less people will have to die, neither twin likeing the dark look they last saw in Zander's face.

Zander smiles as he sees the two cars and bike drive away, Graupner furious as Zander, not sweating, bleeding, or even breathing heavily, takes several steps away from the raging Warlock and his few remaining cultists. Graupner turns to Zander and tells him that it is time for the Paths to end. Zander says that the paths will never end, and he will never win as long as the Paths continue. Graupner takes this as his invitation to kill everyone, Zander not fighting back as Graupner tells the cultists to fire, the sound of laser blasts echoing across the Chicago suburbs.

A short time later, one of the cultists hands Graupner a phone, Alvis on the other end. Alvis tells him that the national guard is on their way, and while Graupner doesn't seem to be concerned with continuing the fight, Alvis tells him he has an escort en route to get them out of the city, retreat being the only thing they can afford without Wendy. An advanced airship arrives, Graupner telling his men to get in as he looks back at Zander's body, his cloak riddled with holes. Then Graupner notices that, even with holes clear through his body, there is no blood on the ground around Zander. Walking closer, Graupner looks through one of the holes in the cloak, but sees no apparent sign of injury. Smiling at his luck, he holds his hand out over the "corpse" and utters a single word, "Halt."
