Black Belt Bentley! contains examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: Black Belt Bentley!
  • An Aesop: There's a difference between self-defense and hurting other people.
  • Boxing Lesson: When Bert, Cedric, and Bentley learn that Schaeffer has a black belt in karate, Schaeffer decides to teach them self-defense. However, when he finds out that Bentley only wants to learn karate to fight back against two bullies who are picking on him, he refuses to let Bentley continue his training.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: Bentley manages to befriend the two bullies by impressing them with his karate moves and convincing them that their bike crash was an accident.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: When Bentley is let back into Schaeffer's class and promoted to a yellow belt, Bert refuses to accept him back...that is, without signing his cast first. Everyone laughs in response and the credits roll.
  • History Repeats: Schaeffer accidentally hurt his friend with karate moves, which made him reluctant to use them again. After Bentley learns karate from him, Bentley accidentally injures his friend Bert with his karate moves.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Bentley panics when he sees that he accidentally broke Bert's arm with his karate moves and later runs off in shame when he sees his cast.
  • My Greatest Failure: After receiving his black belt, Schaeffer got into a petty argument with a friend and accidentally hurt him with his karate moves, which made him swear off using them. The reason Schaeffer was so hesitant to teach Bert, Cedric, and Bentley his karate moves was because he didn't want them to repeat his mistake.
  • No Name Given: The two bullies are only referred to as Classmate #1 and Classmate #2 by the credits.
  • Person with the Clothing: When the two bullies find Bentley practicing karate, they mistake his karate gi for pajamas. In their next encounter, they identify him as "the pajamas kid".
  • Plaster Cast Doodling: After Bentley accidentally breaks Bert's arm practicing his karate moves, Bert gets a bunch of signatures and doodles from his friends on his cast. Bert wants Bentley to sign it as well, but Bentley is too ashamed to even look at it and runs off.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Outraged that the Delicious Drinks company is selling better than his new drink company, Cyril demolishes their company building to eliminate the competition. However, it turns out Cyril owned the Delicious Drinks company as well, which the Pigs inform him about too late.
