Chapter 36: Here, There, and Elsewhere

Another set of short stories provides a glimpse into different character's lives.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Lilith Clawthorne, Emperor Belos and the coven heads, notably Raine Whispers, debut long before Luz enters the Boiling Isles.
  • Adaptational Expansion: We see how Raine was made a candidate to become head of the Bard Coven.
  • Agony of the Feet: To try and connect with their powers, Anne and Marcy have to be barefoot to connect with the land. Due to Marcy's natural clumsiness, she keeps getting hurt by debris and ends up cutting her foot on a rock. By the end of the training she needs to have it bandaged.
  • The Bus Came Back: Lilly returns after her last appearance in "Journey to Wartwood".
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Sprig's makeup skills from "Vlog from the Bog: Glamour" are seen, and him giving everyone in Wartwood a makeover is mentioned.
    • The ancestral sword Anne got from Tritonio in "Combat Camp" appears as part of her new look.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Amara and Raine are the focus of the "Hopes and Dreams" trilogy. They each also star in one other story; Amara in "Scenes from a Newtopian Coffee Shop" and Raine in "Elsewhere".
    • Anne and Marcy are the focus of "Training with Friends". Anne's also the star in "Lady Anne".
    • Lilly and Gustav take the stage in "Training and Growing".
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Luz namedrops this when she tells Anne to keep talking while she's flustered trying to compliment Luz's makeover.
  • Dream Walker: Amara somehow finds herself being able to do this and comes into contact with Raine through her dreams.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Rather than Bernardo giving Anne a new look that culminates in her wearing just a chestplate with her damaged sword, Anne receives pieces of Plantar family armor and takes to using the sword Tritonio gave her.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Anne is still the last of her friends to get a new look in Amphibia.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: Seeing Anne staring at Luz after her makeover, Sprig and Marcy make themselves scarce to give them a moment alone.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Anne and Luz assure that they and Marcy are gonna continue seeing each other, unaware that Marcy's family have moved out of state.
  • Mid-Season Twist: Amara meeting Raine Whispers and learning about the Demon Realm has Raine wondering if Uodeela's curse is similar to another and leads them to look into it.
  • Mythology Gag: In "Training with Friends", Marcy mentions how she "sailed on a warship, stopped a creepy cult, and battled a killer cobra". All of these events were shown in her theme song takeover and elaborated on in Marcys Journal A Guide To Amphibia.
  • Never My Fault: After feeling the effects of Raine's song, Lilith tells herself in private that curing Eda wasn't her fault.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging:
    • When Anne and Luz are expressing their eagerness to get home, and mentioning that they're gonna continue hanging out, Marcy feels uncomfortable, and simply nods just so they don't see that her face is betraying her feelings.
    • Whenever Raine plays a song while adding in their magic, they add in their own emotions, which affects whoever's listening. When adding their feelings of loss and pain, it causes those listening (such as Amara, Lilith, ex.) to become overwhelmed by their inner turmoil. They try to weaponize this on Emperor Belos, but he's barely moved because he's numb from all the trauma he caused.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: After being pushed into it by Sprig, Luz gets a makeover comprised of eyeshadow, blush and lipstick. When Anne sees her, she can't look away.
  • Shipper on Deck: Marcy proves herself to be one for Anne and Luz since she left with Sprig to leave them alone.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Per the recommendation of Luz, Marcy and the Plantars, Anne dons Polianna Plantar's armor consisting of a chestplate with the family's insignia, gauntlets and boots, complete with Tritonio's sword.
  • Vignette Episode: This time, there's nine stories featured.
  • Wham Episode: Amara meets Raine Whispers through the dream world, Emmanuel decides to find the temple where Glenn's sword is kept while sending the rebellion to Newtopia, and Anne has a Significant Wardrobe Shift.
