Chapter 37: The Temple of Courage

The Human trio and the Plantars reach the third temple, which seems to be testing their courage.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Brought Down to Normal: Because the purple gem has been recharged, Luz has just lost her Calamity powers. However, she doesn't know that yet.
  • Call-Forward: The creature Luz and the Plantars face in the last trial seems to be Amphibia's version of Grom/Grometheus the Fear Bringer.
  • Face Your Fears: The third temple turns out to be based on this as each of its trials test the courage of its challengers. The final trial has Luz and the Plantars each face their own worst fears: Luz has to face Camila angrily reprimanding her about what happened at the dance; Sprig has to face Sasha and the possibility that he won't see Anne again; Polly has to face the Curator and her insecurities that she's not as brave as she makes herself out to be; and Hop Pop has to face his deceased daughter guilting him for not saving her or her husband from the herons.
  • Forgiveness: Anne chooses to forgive Hop Pop for burying the Calamity Box, despite not knowing he did it. This is due to him having forgiven her for taking his wallet for "girl time" among the other things the two made amends over.
  • For Want Of A Nail: The Temple of Courage replaces the Temple of Strength as the third temple and Anne forgives Hop Pop for burying the Calamity Box without ever learning what he did in the first place.
  • Given Name Reveal: Sprig and Polly's parents were known as Anura and Victor.
  • The Ghost: Valeriana, who we're reminded supplied Emmanuel with the map.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Luz, Anne and Marcy still don't learn that Hop Pop buried the Calamity Box. Even when he tries to confess to Anne, she doesn't let him say it and forgives him.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Lilly, Gustav, Emmanuel, Percy, and Braddock arrive at the temple moments after Luz, Anne, Marcy, and the Plantars left, so Luz, Lilly and Gustav don't get to meet up or reunite.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The written trailer made it seem that Luz will pull out Masamune, but it later turns out that Lilly was worthy.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Emmanuel's party going through the trials, including their fears.
  • Wham Episode: The Human/Plantar party clears the third temple and recharges the purple gem, but Luz is unaware this means she's given up her powers. The group finds the Masamune, but aren't able to claim it: however, Emmanuel's party finds it and Lilly manages to do so, while also making peace with Lupe's death.
