Chapter 31: The First Temple

Marcy regroups with Luz, Anne and the Plantars, ready to face the challenges of the first temple!

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Big Damn Reunion: The second Marcy sees Luz after arriving at the Plantar Farm, she tackles Luz into a hug happy to see her again.
  • Blatant Lies: Luz has to keep lying whenever she comes close to revealing her powers. Everyone but Anne doesn't suspect anything.
  • Call-Back: Anne remembers when Fens injured her arm in "Toad Tax".
  • Call-Forward: Anne mentions having cricket parts stuck between her teeth.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Played for Drama. Luz attempts to use her Calamity powers in an attempt to beat the flipwart challenge, but the second her eyes change color, she gets electrocuted and sees the opponent's Flipwart king wagging its finger and realizes it won't allow her.
  • Continuity Nod: Anne mentions her interest in parasailing again.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Unlike the actual episode;
    • Marcy actually sees how much her habit of getting too "in the zone" is a threat to the group after completing the first trial.
    • There's three green tiles on the tile floor and Hop Pop (who's trying to secretly make up to Anne for burying the Calamity Box) presses it while Luz takes the last.
    • Instead of Hop Pop, Anne's forced to attack Luz during the flipwart game which leads to their heart to heart talk about how it may have been better that they had to spend time apart after the dance to recover.
  • The Ghost: Uodeela, Lilly, Gustav and Amara are all mentioned. Bella is also mentioned through Amara's letter.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Luz had to help Anne with getting Marcy out of trouble regarding the snakes that escaped from the zoo.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Luz learns about Amara becoming friends with Bella.
    • Anne sees Luz using her calamity powers and begins to wonder about them.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: When Luz tells Marcy that she might accidentally hurt people if she doesn't think about their feelings when doing something, her face falls for a moment.
  • The Reveal: A few facts about Amara are as follows:
    • Her friend in the Newtopian Royal Army is General Yunan.
    • She's been making time to hang out with Bella at least once a week.
    • She helped Marcy prepare for the temple quest and taught her some basics in magic.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • Hop Pop keeps the girls in the dark about burying the Calamity Box, but is feeling guilty about it.
    • Luz refrains from telling everyone about her calamity powers, not wanting Anne and Marcy to be disappointed if they don't acquire their own.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Whatever Amara wants to ask Luz in person when the girls return to Newtopia before going home.
    • Anne begins to suspect Luz of hiding something in regards to her athletic improvement.
  • Shout-Out: As the group enters the temple, Luz says it feels like she's playing a real-life version of Legend of Hilda.
  • Speak in Unison: Luz and Anne do this when telling Sprig he doesn't want to know about the "snake incident".
  • The Stations of the Canon: Luz's involvement isn't enough to change the outcome of the group succeeding in recharging the green gem.
  • Wham Episode: Marcy joins the group, reuniting with Luz, and the group succeeds in recharging the green gem.
