Amara's Upbringing

Amara's past wasn't pleasant, and now it's revealed just how unpleasant.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Breather Episode: After the bittersweet taste "Olivia, Yunan, and Lilly" left in our mouths, this one-shot turns back the clock to show Amara's upbringing and how much she matured since she trained under Uodeela.
  • Call-Back
  • Continuity Nod: At one point, Amara is shown walking Bella home after their meeting with Yunan in the coffee shop.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Amara receives focus as her past and the roots of her initial specist mindset are deconstructed.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Uodeela highlights how the Lights (Alister in particular) actually believed Uodeela wouldn't have students besides Amara to train.
  • Never My Fault: While leaving home, Amara bumps into a frog butler from another family and blames her for the collision out of irritation towards her parents. She briefly regrets her actions, but refuses to accept responsibility.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Yunan asked Odalys for a dowry not long after Amara came back from her apprenticeship.
  • Pet the Dog: While Amara doesn't take responsibility for knocking down the frog butler, she at least doesn't report her so she can keep her job.
  • Private Tutor: Subverted. Alister hired Uodeela to teach Amara how to use magic thinking she'd be Uodeela's only student. Uodeela savors the fact that he was so very wrong.
  • The Reveal: Amara attempted to ask Bella out after their coffee hangout with Yunan but chickened out: she had hoped to ask Luz for advice on asking Bella out when Luz and her friends came to Newtopia to be sent home.
  • Time Skip: The chapter occurs over the course of five years, the first four taking place during Yunan's military training before moving forward to Amara starting her magic training, then their reunion after Amara came back to Newtopia and befriended Bella.
