Recap / The Office USS 6 E 20 New Leads

Go To

Sabre's policy of "sales is king" goes to the sales staff's heads, making the rest of the office resent their bad attitude. In order to regain control, Michael hides their expensive new leads, which backfires on him soon enough.

Episode Tropes:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: The entire sales team in this episode.
  • Acting Unnatural: Michael mentions that the entire lost and found has gone missing, so nobody had better lose anything. Meanwhile, Creed averts everyone's gaze, wearing glasses that he has never been seen wearing before.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: While Michael complains to Gabe how the sales team seems to be subverting his authority, Gabe briefly says, "You are in charge...", causing Michael to think he's finally convinced Gabe to not support the sales staff, only for him to say, "of supporting the sales team.", much to Michael's annoyance.
  • Broken Pedestal: Dwight admits that while he once idolized Michael, he realized that working for Michael proved to be a poor choice, seeing him for the incompetent boss he is. Michael is not pleased, to say the least.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Between Andy and Erin.
  • Celebrity Resemblance: In the Cold Open, Michael tries to convince Jim that the former's new neighbor is in fact Johnny Depp. When Michael admits that the neighbor's mailbox reads "M. Schulman", Jim jokingly suggests he might be M. Night Schulman.
  • Cuteness Overload: Averted. Jim tries to make peace with Oscar and Kelly by showing them pictures of Cece. Oscar nearly gives in, but Kelly manages to stop him from being so easily cooed.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Hiding the leads in the trash resulted in them being unknowingly taken to the dumpster... on trash day.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Jim initially treats Michael hiding the leads as another one of his boss' pointless childish antics. But eventually, he realizes that the sales team's over-eagerness and cockiness really have been causing unnecessary drama in the office and that they need to make amends.
  • Exact Words: When Gabe forces Michael to give the staff the leads, he does so, emphasizing such to Gabe's confusion. To the non-sales staff, which forces the sales staff to do menial tasks to get them.
  • Heel Realization: Eventually the sales staff agree that their poor attitudes were rubbing the others the wrong way and make it up to them with pastries (they were also going to give 2% of their commissions, but changed their minds after the non sales staff accepted the pastries as a peace offering).
  • Never My Fault: Pretty much everybody in this episode. The sales staff refuse to acknowledge their jerkassery due to becoming pompous over Sabre's policy emphasizing the sales teams and pin the whole lead loss situation on Michael, even though Kevin tossed it into the trash, following Erin tossing it out for the garbage truck to pick up. The rest of the Scranton branch also blames Michael for the loss despite very willingly going along with keeping the leads from the sales team. Michael, in turn, refuses to take responsibility, pointing out that they had contributed to the situation as well.
    • The sales staff averts this by realizing that their toxic behavior has indeed been angering the rest of the branch, and seeks to make peace with the rest of the branch.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: The entire sales staff in this episode.
