Recap / The Office USS 5 E 15 Stress Relief Part 2

Go To

To relieve everyone’s spirits, Michael decides to hold a celebrity roast against him, allowing everyone to finally say everything they’ve wanted to say.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: During Michael's The Dog Bites Back speech, he tells Stanley "you crush your wife during sex and your heart sucks". Stanley actually starts laughing which breaks the tension and causes everything to return to normal.
  • Beat Without a "But": Angela doesn't normally enjoy making people laugh...
  • Bilingual Bonus: Oscar's Spanish rant to Michael.
"You give me an ulcer every time I wake up and I have to come to work. I have to come to work for you. For you!"
  • Butt-Monkey: Toby, the one person Michael hates for no good reason, is the only one who is not allowed to say anything bad about him.
  • The Dog Bites Back: The episode can be seen as providing two examples:
    • The roast itself being one for the entire office (sans Toby) finally getting back at Michael for having to put up with his immature jokes and behavior for years.
    • When Michael finally returns to the office after his roast, he takes revenge for all the mean things everyone said about him by going around to everyone one by one and coldly pointing out all their irritating quirks and personality flaws in turn: "Boom. Roasted." As everyone is simultaneously not thrilled to be insulted but also feeling guilty about hurting Michael's feelings with their own mean jokes and so are not exactly in a position to object to turnabout being fair play, the result is a lot of awkwardness... until Michael makes it to Stanley, who bursts out laughing at his insult.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: The next day at work Kevin keeps making roast jokes with a sock puppet during break. Oscar told him to stop because not only the sock smelled, but the jokes weren’t funny anymore since it really hurt Michael’s feelings.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: While Michael was a fool to set up a roast where his employees would have the opportunity to offer their unfiltered thoughts about him, he's certainly not wrong to feel upset and hurt by what a lot of them say, and everyone afterwards guiltily realises that they took things too far. Furthermore, what usually makes a roast work is that after all the cutting comments, each contributor then goes on to say something sincerely nice about the subject of the roast to take some of the sting out of the nastiness and reinforce that it's all in done a spirit of good fun; in this case, everyone left out the nice things. Michael even points out after Pam roasts him that that's what they're supposed to do, but everyone who goes after ignores him.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The things his employees say during the roast genuinely hurt Michael's self esteem. At the same time, little else can be expected since he told them that not only could they go as hard as they liked, but also that anything about him was fair game.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: The staff are clearly feeling rather ashamed after they realise that the roast went too far and genuinely hurt Michael's feelings.
  • Not Even Bothering with an Excuse: While Pam, Jim and (oddly enough) Angela at least try to couch their insults as good-natured jabs, the rest of the office quickly drop any pretense of an actual roast and just start viciously insulting Micheal to his face.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Everyone gives one to Michael during the roast, except Toby. In a deleted scene, Jan gives an absolutely brutal one over the phone, telling everyone about how Michael ruined her life.
  • The Roast: Michael decides to host one of these so the employees can express their frustrations with him and relieve their stress. The jabs start off lighthearted and Michael enjoys them, but then they get a little too personal and mean-spirited, upsetting him. By the next day, everyone realizes they went too far and feels bad.
  • Teeny Weenie: During the roast, Pam mentions the time she saw Michael undressing and blurts out "his thing is so small".
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Downplayed and discussed. Jim turns out to be the reason Pam's father ultimately decides to divorce her mother. After hearing the extent of Jim's love for Pam, he realizes that he no longer feels that way about Helene, if he ever did in the first place.
