Recap / The Office UK Christmas Special Part Two

Go To

Part 2 of the The Office (UK) Christmas special, and the show's final episode. David is desperate to find a date for the office Christmas party. Dawn is set to return to Wernham Hogg.

Tropes:

  • Chekhov's Gun: The Secret Santa.
  • Dating Service Disaster: David's first and second dates.
  • The Dog Bites Back: David finally stands up to Finch after he insults his date:
David: Chris, why don't you fuck off?
  • The Grinch:
    • For the Secret Santa, Gareth requests vouchers or £10 in an envelope.
Tim: A tenner in an envelope. The spirit of Christmas!
    • Lee calls Christmas a "con" and just tells Dawn to work out what she spent on him and take it out of his wallet.
  • Happy Ending: Tim and Dawn finally get together and David finds romance.
  • Hypocritical Humor: David complains about his second date being overweight. He also says she sent an unrepresentative photo of herself, when he did exactly the same.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While it seemed mean to ban David from the office, Neil was correct that as someone no longer employed by the company, there was no good reason for David to keep turning up unannounced.
  • Kick the Dog: It's subtly done, but Neil keeps checking that David still wants two tickets for the Christmas party, knowing how slim David's chances are of actually finding a date.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Gareth sets up a dating profile for David to help him find a date for the party.
    • Tim takes pity on David and agrees to go out for a drink with him when no-one else will.
    • Lee informs Gareth that he is being mocked by Tim and Dawn when he points out the double entendres they are using. But it's also possible that he just wanted to spoil their fun.
  • Psycho Ex-Girlfriend: Invoked by David on his dating profile, when he specifies that he doesn't want to be matched with a divorcee in case the ex-husband is a nutter.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Anne gets one from Glynn.
  • Secret Santa: The office does one. It becomes important later, as Tim's thoughtful gift to Dawn (an oil painting set) is what finally prompts her to leave Lee.
  • Shipper on Deck: Keith mentions to Tim that Dawn coming back for the Christmas party probably represents the last chance he (Tim) will have of getting together with Dawn.
  • Stock Lateral Thinking Puzzle: At the party David appears to have given Tim and Gareth the 'doctor and son in a car crash' riddle.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Neil is more openly hostile towards David than he was in the series. He keeps goading David about bringing a date to the Christmas party (knowing David has very little chance of actually doing this) and then bans him from the office. He also laughs at Finch's joke about Carol.
