Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 5 E 2 To Bowl Or Not To Bowl

Go To

Oscar's bowling team is ready to take home the championship trophy...but then his competitiveness turns off Felix, the only skilled player, and he quits. Desperate to convince his roommate to come back, Oscar tries blackmail and reverse psychology. Then he realizes that Felix always seems to find some way not to participate in competitions and diagnoses him with a fear of it. Will Felix win past his hang-ups to bring home the trophy?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bowling for Ratings: The episode centers around Oscar's never-before-mentioned bowling team making a run at the championship - potentially without its star player, Felix.
  • Call-Back: When he diagnoses Felix with a fear of win-or-lose situations that causes psychosomatic illness, Oscar reminds him of the time he lost his voice before being able to propose to Gloria.
  • The Door Slams You: Oscar slams the door on Felix multiple times when he is hanging in a sling to relax his back.
  • Gag Nose: Oscar says that one of Murray's only strikes was disqualified because his nose crossed the line.
  • Go to Your Room!: The episode has Oscar yelling this at Felix after losing his patience with him during an argument about his resignation. Felix replies that he doesn't have to take this and that he's going to his room.
  • Resign in Protest: Felix quits the bowling team out of principle after it degenerates from a group of guys having fun to a win-at-all-costs competition. This does not sit well with Oscar.
  • Shout-Out: The title refers to the oft-quoted line from Hamlet, "to be or not to be."
