Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 4 E 3 The Odd Decathlon

Go To

Oscar's mistake leads to Felix's insurance being cut off and he goes in reinstate his policy. When he finds out that Oscar bought himself insurance for $200 less a month, he complains, given Oscar's unhealthier habits. Eventually, Felix and Oscar end up pitted against one another for ten events to prove who is the more physically fit.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Agony of the Feet: When Felix drags him to the insurance company, Oscar steps on one of his feet. Felix cites this as just one more type of accident he's no longer insured against; Oscar tells him it was no accident.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Felix challenges Oscar to the decathlon to prove that he's more physically fit. Only after both of them have thoroughly exhausted themselves do they realize that the insurance company didn't consider Felix a bigger risk; he simply bought a more expensive policy.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Terrified of Germs: Felix wants Oscar to call his insurance company after his policy lapses, saying that the telephone might be germy and viruses go after people who don't have insurance.
  • You Owe Me: Felix drags Oscar into accompanying him to get his insurance renewed, saying he needs someone to make sure no expensive accidents happen on the way. He further reminds Oscar that it was his failure to mail the check that lost him the policy in the first place.
