Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 3 E 11 Password

Go To

When Allen Ludden, a major fan of Oscar's, invites him to appear on Password as a celebrity guest, super-fan Felix is determined to finagle a position as Oscar's partner. Matters go awry even before the cameras roll when Oscar nearly replaces Felix with his latest girlfriend, and as they arrive, it turns out that they've been matched against champion Betty White. Can the odd couple manage a win?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: The Password cast keep calling Felix "Mr. Ungle" rather than "Mr. Unger".
  • Game Show Appearance: Felix and Oscar play on a New York-based version of Password ABC with Allen Ludden and Betty White as themselves, and Oscar constantly being frustrated by Felix's incredibly obscure and obtuse clues (like "Aristophanes" when the password is "Bird", because Aristophanes wrote a play called The Birds). Here's the full episode (the Password scenes begin at 7:18 of Part 2). These not only provide a rare glimpse into the long-since-destroyed ABC era of Password, but Felix and Oscar even Lampshade the set's obvious differences from the TV version.
Oscar: Doesn't that look bigger on TV?
    Felix: That's often the case.
  • Hired for Their Looks: Right before the practice round, Oscar takes Felix into the kitchen and tells him he's replaced him as his partner with Mitzi, despite admitting before that most of her charms are appearance-based. He changes his mind after she blames his clues for their losing the practice round.
  • I Gave My Word: Felix still holds the practice round of Password he set up to allow Oscar to get used to the show after hearing he's been replaced by Mitzi. As he passive-aggressively says, he promised he would help Oscar learn the ropes of the show and he intends to keep his promise.
  • Mondegreen Gag: During the practice session Felix arranges, Oscar's girlfriend Mitzi flubs a clue because she misheard "the age of Aquarius" as "the age of aquariums."
  • Sore Loser: Felix refuses to accept his replacement as Oscar's partner while they're on the show, though not in the sense of throwing a tantrum so much as not knowing when to quit. He protests that the clues he gave were really effective ones, attempts to prove his skills, and has to be dragged off the set.
  • Starstruck Speechless: Felix tries to talk to Allen Ludden and Betty White when they happen to enter a restaurant as he, Oscar, and their dates are preparing to leave. It doesn't go very well; Felix fumbles the traditional "I'm Your Biggest Fan" comment and accidentally brings up Miss White's age.
  • Your Favorite: Oscar's favorite breakfast is scrambled eggs (or jumbled cluck in Password speak).
