Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 3 E 10 Oscars Birthday

Go To

Once again, Oscar's birthday has rolled around, and he warns Felix against trying to throw him a surprise party.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Brick Joke: While poking around Oscar's bedroom in search of inspiration for the theme, Felix finds a six-pack of beer, still in the plastic rings and completely empty. He can't believe that Oscar managed to drink it that way. Later in the episode, the viewer sees Oscar start on another six-pack the same way.
  • Formerly Fit: Subverted. Felix locates and calls up Oscar's childhood sweetheart, Judy Skelton, who comes out of the studio closet to reveal herself as a portly woman. The viewer might think she's gained some weight since Oscar saw her last...but according to him, she actually lost some.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: After Felix finds out Murray blabbed, Miriam adds that Oscar tried to bribe Monroe (the super's son) with five dollars to tell him the plan. Felix confidently declares that he can rely on Monroe — only for Miriam to tell him Monroe wants to know how much Felix will pay for his silence. '
  • I Reject Your Reality: Oscar tells Felix over and over that he hates surprise parties and doesn't want one, but Felix keeps ignoring him year after year, claiming he knows better.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Murray claims to have flunked the "disguises" portion of his detective training, which does not surprise anyone considering that his "disguise" was a pair of funny glasses.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Felix asks Oscar's mother to call him so he can ask her about Oscar's life. When Oscar catches him acting oddly, he declares he knows what's going on — Felix has a date and wants to hide it from Miriam and Gloria. Felix is altogether too happy to admit that Oscar "caught" him.
  • Surprise Party: According to Oscar, Felix tries to throw him one every year. He never succeeds in surprising Oscar, and when Oscar feigns surprise, Felix always complains he's not convincing. Felix does manage to surprise Oscar after the "This is Your Life" part of the shindig seemingly goes wrong.
