Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 2 E 6 Murray The Fink

Go To

During the weekly poker game, Murray laments that his career is going nowhere. Oscar tells him it's because he's "too nice" and that he'll always fail as a policeman because of that. Unfortunately, that spurs Murray to bust the poker players. Will the truth emerge, and what will become of their friendship?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Courtroom Episode: Oscar rides Murray about being a bad cop to the point where Murray raids the weekly poker game. The poker players all have to appear in court, and the trial quickly gets out of hand.
  • Hypocritical Humor: The poker players agree "all for one and one for all"...and promptly dissolve into "every man for himself" once the officer on guard announces two of them can go home.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While planning to take his wife out to celebrate, Murray asks Oscar for a restaurant recommendation, going so far as to ask where he'd go if he could. Felix asks the same question after being released for good behavior, much to Oscar's fury.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: When a pickpocket gets brought into the courtroom (for the umpteenth time), the bailiff lists the charge as petty theft. The pickpocket protests the word "petty."
  • Let Me at Him!: When Murray enters the cell and begins gloating about solving one of the major outstanding gambling cases, Oscar tells Felix to come over there...to hold him back as he lunges at Murray.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Felix describes Murray in glowing terms while attempting to demolish Oscar's case against him...which unintentionally guilt-trips Murray into confessing.
  • One Phone Call: Some of the graffiti Felix finds on the prison wall recommends a woman for said call.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The police agree to release two of the poker players, Vincent Barella and Homer Degan. Everyone wonders who Homer Degan is.
Speed: What, you think when I was born, my mom named me 'Speed'?!
  • Sticky Fingers: Freddie Noonan, Oscar's cellmate, is a pickpocket with a particular fondness for watches.
  • Tempting Fate: Oscar tells Murray that a police officer doesn't look the other way when he sees lawbreaking and says that Murray will never achieve the toughness necessary for that. Murray promptly busts the poker game.
