Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 2 E 12 Surprise Surprise

Go To

Felix and Oscar both get an unpleasant surprise when they find out each of them has plans for the apartment at the very same time — Oscar has set up a marathon poker game for sportswriters from around the country and Felix wants to hold his daughter Edna's tenth birthday party. Ultimately, Oscar wins the argument, but when the party gets rained out, the problems start over. Will it actually be a happy birthday?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Birthday Party Goes Wrong: Felix has to move Edna's birthday party to the park because of Oscar's plans for the apartment. Unfortunately, the weather picks that day for a deluge, leaving the kids, Felix, and the clown wet. When they come into the apartment, the issues with sharing begin, such as Edna accidentally wandering into Oscar's room during "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" and Sherman the clown becoming more interested in the game than the party. Ultimately, Sherman leaves when the poker game gets relocated.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Edna uses her father's "Oscar, Oscar, Oscar" during the afternoon.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Sherman the clown mentions that his "big finish" act involves his shoes exploding. When he leaves, he hasn't done it yet, because it would hurt his feet to do it with wet socks. Luckily, Oscar talks Sherman into lending him the clown suit and comes back in his place. The "biggie" trick saves the party.
  • Gag Echo: Upon seeing the state of Oscar's room, Edna makes multiple exclamations of disgust. As the day ends, Felix points out that even though he lost quite a bit of money, he made a girl happy, and asks how he feels. Oscar mimics the disgusted noise.
  • Gift-Giving Gaffe: On Edna's last visit, she brought Oscar a gift. Unfortunately, it was room freshener.
  • I'll Kill You!: When the poker players end up having to leave the apartment entirely, Oscar gently holds Felix's chin and tells him never to let his guard down if he wants to remain alive.
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: Attempting to salvage the party after the clown leaves, Felix tries to read the girls a book. Unfortunately, he picks a thick volume on the history of stamp collecting.
  • Non-Ironic Clown: Sherman acts goofy and has many funny bits in his repertoire for kids, and all the girls find him entertaining. That said, the episode does focus on the man behind the persona, who does this act to pay the bills and finds poker more interesting than clowning. Felix, who believes unreservedly in this type of clown, does not find it amusing to have to track down the performer as he tries to get a few hands in.
  • Trash of the Titans: Oscar's messy room comes up as the butt of jokes again numerous times.
    • When Edna gets bored watching television, she comes into Oscar's room, makes a disgusted noise, and tells him that it's a fire hazard and that Felix said that eventually he'd get irrevocably lost in there. She also notices something on the floor.
Edna: Uncle Oscar, you have a blue stain on your rug.
Oscar: No, that's the original color.
    • When the party gets moved indoors due to rain and the poker game gets moved into Oscar's room, Oscar says they'll play on the bed. One of the sportswriters asks where that is.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: After the party gets rained out and the clown goes home early (after having tried to skip out numerous times to play poker), Edna says that it's the worst birthday she ever had. Thankfully, all it takes to turn it around is a turn from Oscar as a clown and a little cake.
