Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 1 E 16 Lovers Dont Make House Calls

Go To

When Felix becomes sick in the middle of the night, Oscar can't get ahold of his usual doctor. Instead, he thinks he's hit the jackpot when the replacement, Dr. Cunningham, turns out to be a gorgeous woman with an interest in sports to match his own. Now, if he could only get his new love interest to go on a date...

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Catch Your Death of Cold: Oscar goes for an hours-long walk in the rain after his attempt to ask Nancy on a date flops, and he comes down with the flu that has been sweeping the city immediately thereafter.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Oscar has trouble getting a word in edgewise even after seeing Dr. Cunningham because of the flu running rampant through the city. He comes down with that same flu late in the episode.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Oscar asks Felix to induce an allergic reaction so he can get in contact with Dr. Cunningham, and Felix refuses. Trying to make it up to him, Oscar starts to make him a tuna sandwich. Felix lists more and more specifications, annoying his roommate, and then Oscar sees the mayonnaise, to which Felix is allergic. He hesitates, but almost goes through with it before Felix calls him a good friend.
  • Overcomplicated Menu Order: Felix's specifications for the tuna fish sandwich Oscar is making for him take several minutes to go through and range from reasonable to outlandish.
  • Self-Induced Allergic Reaction: Having been unable to get Dr. Cunningham alone long enough to ask for a date, Oscar asks Felix to expose himself to one of his multitudinous allergens so they can call her in. Felix refuses.
  • Tom Boy: When Oscar asks Dr. Cunningham how she knows all the sports trivia she just reeled off, she says that she was a tomboy from a sporty family. She apparently beat up a famous athlete when they were both kids.
