Film: The King and I (1999)
This review contains examples of:
- Accentuate the Negative: Zig-zagged; while the Critic begins the review by deriding the earlier 1956 live-action adaptation as boring and historically inaccurate, as the review proceeds he admits that the live-action version did have a number of genuinely good qualities... mostly so that he can illustrate how this version royally screwed them up.
- Call-Back: When Critic notes how they drastically changed the character of Kralahome, he notes when they made the Japanese bomb hospitals.
- Complexity Addiction: One of Critic's complaints about Kralahome.Critic: You know, guy, you keep coming up with these complicated ways to seize power. Have you ever thought about just going up to a really powerful nation and being like, "Dragons! I can make dragons! Gimme all your shit!"? note
- Department of Redundancy DepartmentAnna: It's a lie.King: A false lie!Critic: Doesn't that technically make it true?
- Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Shakira as depicted in the fake commercial.
- No Indoor Voice: Gerard Butler, when he sings. Or Shakira.Shakira: No-O-o-O-o-O-o-O-o-O! He's-a R-i-I-i-I-i-I-i-I-i-I-i-IGHT...
- Parody Commercial: An ad for the "57th Anniversary Edition" soundtrack of The King and I with the songs performed by Russell Crowe.
- Running Gag: Whenever something weird or outlandish happens, Critic pulls down a sign reading "YOU HEARD RIGHT!".
- Critic making up lyrics to "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" to mock Kralahome.
- Captions pointing out Kralahome's change in clothing between shots.
- Shout-Out
- "Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the loosest adaptation of all?"
- Critic calls Thailand something out of Epcot.
- Kralahome is called "Thai Jafar" and Shang Tsung.
- A fake version of the scene where Anna challenges her pupils' delusions is parodied where Critic is convinced history was proven by the animated versions of Pocahontas, Anastasia and The Little Mermaid.
- Critic assumes that Anna dancing with an imaginary image is what dead Jedi do when they're dead and want to dance.
- When the King asks "Who-who-who?", Critic says he needs to work on his Daffy Duck impression.
- Since the movie is a Rankin Bass production, the scene where the King uses a whip is accompanied by "Where There's a Whip, There is a Way".
- While Kralahome is celebrating the King's apparent demise, "I'm Super" plays.
- Critic says that the animation is so bad, he keeps expecting the TV Funhouse logo to pop up.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Critic's interpretation of Russel Crowe.Announcer: The King and I, sung by Russel Crowe, because... by God, somebody has to humor him.
- Special Effect Failure: Critic notes when rats "jump" out of Kralahome's shadow.
- Stupid Evil: Taking the movie's villain's plan (contrasted with the original musical) at face value, the Critic points out that randomly trying to turn away Anna's ship at the beginning of the movie is the best way to ruin his own plan.
- The Stinger: A blooper from the making of the fake commercial.
- Take That!: Critic says that Kralahome is a one-man political debate because he can't agree on anything.
- Critic mocks the fans who hate the new white wall behind him.
- At Russell Crowe in the mock commercial, thanks to his singing in Les Misérables (2012).
- And at Shakira, who joins him in singing, and sings everything she says.
- Tempting Fate: When Critic assumes that Siam's story will finally be heard in the film, the opening scene with the dragon plays, followed by Critic tossing the book in the air and shooting it.
- At the very end, Critic declares you'll never see him participating in a musical fad. Just before he leaves the studio, though, the Harlem Shake dance starts. Critic shoots the dancers, saying the meme was never funny.
- When the Critic compares the film's focus on the side characters to people focusing on a wall behind a person, he finds comments on his videos complaining about his new wall and nothing else.
- Unpleasable Fanbase: Critic trying to get a new background to please the audience.
"Who, who, who?"
