Film: Jack (1996)
This review contains examples of:
- Call-Back: "FUCKING BUBBLES!", first used in the second commercials review.
- Bad Randy Newman songs, first used in the James and the Giant Peach review.
Critic: (as Randy Newman, singing) Sadness / It makes you feel bad / But at least both your parents weren’t eaten alive by a rhino! / That'd be funny. - I'll Tell You When I've Had Enough!: The Critic acts out a scenario where Jack visits a bar and demands more and more milk.
- Innocent Innuendo: "I think it's time to spank the monkey..." (pulls up his stuffed monkey Bobo)
- Kiddie Kid: The film is criticized for writing Jack more like a kindergartener than an actual ten-year-old and it's not likely it was intentionally written like that.
- Raging Stiffie: Referenced:Critic: But things are looking up when he discovers that his teacher is Jennifer Lopez. Actually, I imagine a lot of things would be going up as soon as he'd discover that.
- Shout-Out: "Jack's okay, and he's back okay!"
- Soundtrack Dissonance: The Critic thought the music that played in the scene where Jack's friends ask him if he can come out and play is inappropriately light-hearted, and wonders how that music would fit in downbeat scenes from other movies, like Marley & Me.
- Star-Derailing Role: Invoked: When a clubhouse in the movie collapses and falls down the tree:Critic: (as Bill Cosby) This house is fallin' faster than my movie career! (as Robin Williams) Mine, too! Ho ho!
- Strictly Formula: The Critic accuses Robin Williams's films of following the same formula, right down to the heartfelt speech at the end.Critic: (as Robin Williams, over various Williams film clips) I'm quirky, which is good! I fought things, and I won! I'll be saying this in the next five movies I'm in. I'll apologize by doing more stand-up.
"Wow!"
