It's called the film that almost killed Disney, but how much of this black sheep of the Disney Animated Canon is good and how much is not?

Release date: January 29, 2019

Review of: The Black Cauldron

This review contains examples of:

  • Award Show: The main event of the '80s party is an awards show for '80s kids movie survivors.
  • Blunt "Yes" / Tempting Fate: When Gurgi appears in the movie, the Critic ridicules him, leading Taran on the stage to demand to know if he is insulting him. Everyone in the audience silently pleads with the Critic to deny it, but instead, he yells, "YES, YES, I AM! I FIND HIM VERY ANNOYING!" This leads Taran to call a very annoying Gurgi to the stage with him, which makes the audience Face Palm themselves, and the Critic realizes his mistake.
  • Global Ignorance / Hypocrite: Doug is more than happy to make fun of Welsh names, practically calling them gibberish. Do you think he would have the same attitude towards the Chinese names in Mulan? Or the French names in Beauty and the Beast? Probably not.
  • Longer-Than-Life Sentence: Parodied when the Horned King captures Taran:
Horned King: Throw the boy to the dungeon!
Critic: (as the Horned King) Then throw the dungeon in the dungeon! Then throw the dungeon to the boy!
  • Roger Rabbit Effect: Mrs. Brisby and Fievel are shown in animated form when they are announced as a tie for winner of "Smallest Survivor in a Scary-as-Shit '80s Kids Film".
  • Running Gag: The answer to the Critic's question if The Black Cauldron is really as underrated as everyone says it is? "It's complicated."
    • Also, "I'm a warrior!"
  • Shout-Out: The guests at the Survivors of '80s Kids Films party are a who's who of characters from these movies, including Atreyu, Dorothy Gale, Urzah, Mrs. Brisby, Fievel, The Brave Little Toaster, Malcolm Ray (who apparently is the grandson of Cairon), Luke Eveshim, Taran, and Sarah Williams.
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: This happens when the Horned King reaches for the image of the Cauldron in the water showing where it is, which scares Taran, and he runs away, stepping into the water bowl and splashing the water in the King's eyes, causing it to have an agonizing effect on him. In response, the Critic speaks on the Horned King's behalf:
Critic (as the Horned King): I'm melting, I'm melt— Wait, why does this hurt me? Oh, of course. When pigs tell the future in water, it instantly becomes toxic. Who wrote this?

"I'm a warrior!"
