Recap / The Muppets Mayhem S1E9 "Track 9: Drift Away"

Go To

As the band gets further wrapped up in their new internet hobbies, their band practices become fewer and fewer until a shocking announcement is made during a podcast.

Tropes:

  • Breaking the Fellowship: The Mayhem breaks up to pursue their own interests.
  • Call-Back: Nora calms Animal down by putting on the tape of the Electric Mayhem performing with Elton John on The Muppet Show.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: During the scene where Lips has hired some speech writers to help him brainstorm ideas for saving the world through a TED Talk, pausing the scene shows that there are already some ideas written down on a whiteboard behind them, such as "Feed the homeless", "Home the foodless", and "Universal health care/hair care".
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: The band, having become intoxicated by the internet lifestyle, all end up getting distracted from their musical work for their new side hobbies; Dr. Teeth and Penny start a YouTube channel where they eat spicy foods and film their reactions, Floyd becomes a writer for internet ad jingles, Janice starts an online yoga movement called the Forsurlians that quickly turns into a cult, Zoot takes nonstop photos on his phone instead of his camera and gains enough notoriety for them to be put in a gallery, Lips decides to "save the world" by becoming a TED Talker, and Animal becomes an instant internet celebrity hit on TikTok.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In the previous episode, Nora and JJ convinced The Electric Mayhem to get into social media in order to better advertise themselves, and the beginning of this episode shows that it's working. However, the band members have all gotten so wrapped up in social media that they're neglecting their music, and Moog tells Nora that this new approach goes against what the band is about. Moog is eventually proven right, as the band eventually announces that they're breaking up to focus on their respective solo projects, and Nora is forced to realize that she's the one who caused this (though it doesn't help that she also got caught up in JJ's tech-savviness).
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: The cold open sees the band becoming carsick from using their phones in Nora’s car. It cuts to the theme song before they actually puke.
