Recap / The Lion Guard S 2 E 13 The Morning Report

Go To

Summary: After Zazu is captured by the hyenas per Scar's orders, it's up to the Lion Guard to rescue him.

This episode contains examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Zazu.
  • Animation Bump: The callbacks to the original movie are noticeably animated better than the rest of the episode, with Simba's design hearkening back to the film.
  • The Bus Came Back: Pua, the former crocodile leader, makes an appearance in a flashback. This is his first appearance since "The Rise of Makuu" in Season 1.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Simba's snarkiness around Zazu hasn't lessened with age, as when Zazu is adamant on the morning report, Simba proceeds to emphasize the word morning and asks if that is necessary, as it is the middle of the night.
  • Evil Is Petty: Given how much Scar hated Zazu and delighted in enslaving and threatening him with death during his reign as king, it’s easy to deduce that Scar targeting him for death is more than a little petty.
  • Genre Savvy: Janja is shown to be smart enough to realize that Zazu is giving him useless information about Simba, and that the bird is merely stalling for time to get rescued.
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: Bupu's horns somehow wind up stuck in a low-lying tree branch. As the Guard can't remove the entire branch due to a bird nesting in it, he's forced to wear the branch for the remainder of the episode and has to wait it out. But, it ended up being working out better than he had hoped; having Nyuni the bird gives him an extra set of eyes to better tend to the young antelopes.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Zazu was willing to pull one when Kion and Bunga, as cubs, challenged the crocodiles for no reason. Pua, impressed by Zazu's bravery and not wanting to provoke Simba, agrees to let them all go without incident.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: The hyenas decide to put Zazu in a bone cage and place him dangerously close to a mini crater full of lava to get him to spill every secret about the Pride Lands.
  • Musical World Hypotheses: As Zazu performs "I do Have a Great Deal to Say", the Lion Guard hears both him singing and the music off in the distance. Bungaa even remarks that Zazu's singing is a little flat when Zazu screams from the steam vents.
  • Mythology Gag: Several to the original movie:
    • Zazu is once again trapped in a rib cage. His prison is also located in a geyser field, akin to the "birdie-boiler" in the Elephant Graveyard.
    • The "I Just Can't Wait to be King" and "King of Pride Rock" shots are referenced in Zazu's song.
    • When Simba walks in one scene, zebras, elephants and giraffes are kneeling to him like in the "Circle of Life" scene from the original.
    • The episode's title is taken from a song performed by Zazu that was initially written for the Broadway musical, and was added to the 2003 IMAX and Platinum Edition releases of the film.
    • Zazu’s predicament, being trapped in a bone cage by hyenas in danger of falling into lava, bears a resemblance to a mission in Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Zazu being late for his morning report is enough for Simba to suspect something is wrong. Even Scar knows Zazu's punctual nature means he will be missed immediately and advises the Hyenas to be quick with their interrogation.
  • Scheherezade Gambit: Once Zazu realizes what the Hyenas want from him is intel on Simba, he wastes plenty of time telling them as much trivial information as possible.
Zazu: No need for steam, I'll tell you much more, in fact we might be here all day!
  • Songs in the Key of Panic: Zazu's "I Do Have a Great Deal to Say", especially the final verse. Justified as Janja and the hyenas are boiling him at the stake.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Bupu wasn't happy that they got him unstuck, but with the branch in his horns, with him complaining that he looks silly. That is, until he realizes having another pair of eyes does wonders for him.
