Recap / The Legend Of Zelda 1989 E 8 Underworld Connections

Go To

A group of Vire use a bomb to break the Triforce of Wisdom into pieces small enough for them to carry. While Link and Zelda manage to defeat one before it can get away, it's too late to get the other two. Thinking quickly, Zelda instructs Link to shoot into the Triforce to zap them, which teleports his sword's laser beams through to the other pieces since they're connected. While the Vire are successfully defeated, the pieces were dropped somewhere in the underworld and the only hint on their locations is through the heroes' own Triforce piece, with one side feeling wet, and the other side feels hot to the touch. This means that in order to find them, Link and Zelda would have to scour the underworld for areas that match before Ganon can grab them for himself.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Dismantled MacGuffin: The Triforce of Wisdom is broken into three pieces, and the heroes have to find the other two before Ganon.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: After zapping the Vire that was trying to take a Triforce piece, Link ends up hanging from his window by his own feet and his tunic falls down to reveal white boxers with red hearts on them. Right in front of Princess Zelda, no less, though she doesn't comment on it.
  • Implausible Boarding Skills: Link uses his shield on spouting torrents of fire to surf both Zelda and himself out of the underworld.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Aquamentus' appearance in the show is certainly strange compared to other draconic enemies like the three-headed Gleeok and actual dragon in the first episode. Compared to the other two, its body is not very reptilian beyond its head and tail, it's built more like a horse with hooves, pegasus-like wings and unicorn-like horn. It even tries to buck Link off of its back like a horse would.
  • Shield Surf: Link can use his shield to surf on fire.
  • You Don't Look Like You: In the games, Aquamentus is pretty much a fire-breathing dragon with a unicorn horn that acts as its weak point. In this episode, it looks like an actual mix between a Winged Unicorn and a dragon. It has a very equine-like body with feathery wings, a draconic head and tail.
