• Action Girl: June, surviving on her own in a school infested with zombies
• The Bully: In a flashback, Dirk is one towards Quint. In the present, he's willing to put it aside because being lonely sucks, though he's not above mocking both Quint and Jack whenever they act like dorks.
• Damsel out of Distress: Jack's goal is to be the hero by rescuing June, only to learn upon finally finding her that she's been doing fine alone and his intervention has made the situation much worse.
• Eye Scream: Blarg gets a scar on one of its right eyes after Jack jabs him with a broken baseball bat. Both the right eyes later get damaged after Jack shoots a chemical at them, causing them to be red and dripping with acid.
• How We Got Here: The episode opens up with Jack attempting to get a screwdriver and fighting off Blarg. A flashback shows the beginning of the apocalypse and why Jack needs the screwdriver: to fix a walkie-talkie, his main form of communication, that broke when the apocalypse started.
• Sequel Hook: The episode ends with an intelligent, humanoid monster tracking the protagonists.
• Stab the Scorpion: When Jack offers Dirk the chance to join him and Quint, Dirk suddenly charges at Jack, seemingly with the intent to beat him up. However, he is actually aiming for the flying monster that was approaching Jack from behind.
• Super-Persistent Predator: Blarg the monster is hellbent on finding and killing Jack after Jack slashes one of its eyes with a broken-bat.
