Recap / The Interns S 7 E 9

Go To

Olga thinks that she and Phil must break up; he agrees, but he has one condition: they would tell everyone that it's he who dumped her, not the other way around (or Phil would become everyone's laughing stock). But when Lyuba asks him for details, he manages to make himself look like an utter asshole, and now he is hated by everyone. In attempt to "fix" the situation, Phil only succeeds in creating inverse of the first story, which makes him look pathetic — something he tried to avoid all along.

Lobanov gets sent to work in Traumatology under Bykov's friend, Gennadiy (as a punishment for his yet another dangerous screwup). But... he actually likes Gennadiy much more than Bykov and now considers to work under him. But then Gennadiy (while still acting friendly) assigns every new patient to Lobanov, just in the middle of celebration. Lobanov quickly realises that working under Bykov may be not so bad after all.

Varya still recovers after operation, and Bykov assigns Gleb to work with her. But Gleb is lazy, as always, and dumps all work on Varya herself. Varya tells Bykov, who gives her the right to decide wether Gleb can leave or he would stay on a night shift, based on the quality of his work. But rather than use it for good, Varya decides to just exploit Gleb. It ends when she tasks Gleb with bringing her a TV, and Gleb takes it from Bykov, making him so angry that he abolishes Varya's privilegies. And then Gleb tells Varya that he lied to Bykov, knowing that he wouldn't actually check: he was just that tired of Varya abusing him.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Annoying Patient: Gleb gets tasked to work with Varya, who's still recovering after her operation, as a doctor, but decides to slack off and dump all work on Varya. Angry Bykov gives Varya the right to leave Gleb on a night shift if he starts slacking off again. Varya decides to exploit it and force Gleb to please her, in progressively more abusive ways. In the end, she demands him to bring a TV, which Gleb takes from Bykov, enraging him to the point of revoking Varya's privilegies. However, she never demanded a TV; Gleb lied to Bykov, knowing that he wouldn't bother with actually checking.
  • Better as Friends: Olga thinks that she and Phil would be better as friends; as a couple, they only gets into troubles. Phil takes it surprisingly well, and only has one condition: they would tell everyone that it was him who dumped her, not the other way around; otherwise, everyone would mock him. Unfortunately, when he gets asked for details by Lyuba, he accidentally makes himself sound like a jerk.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Phil and Olga quietly breaks up, but, to avoid becoming everyone's laughing stock once again if it would look like she dumped him, Phil (with Olga's permission) creates a fake story where he dumped her. Unfortunately, Lyuba asks him for details, and his improvisation makes him look like a cruel asshole. Lyuba, being the gossiper she is, quickly spreads it around. Now, Phil is hated by everyone. Even Gleb and Bykov considers him to be an utter jerk. Even orderlies have no respect to him and refuses to help him. And Olga refuses to debunk those rumours, because she enjoys everyone's support, while Phil's problems are entirely self-inflicted (no one forced him to overdramatise everything, he could've achieved desired result without painting himself as an asshole). Phil tries to create the inverse story where she dumped him (with the roles being the same, just switched), which results in Lyuba now considering him pathetic — just as he originally feared. At least, the rumours were stopped.
  • Not So Harmless Punishment: Lobanov is actually happy with his new workplace, because people are much nicer than Bykov, and he has significantly more freedom under Gennadiy. Bykov is surprised, because it was not what he expected when he sent Semyon to work with Gennadiy. Then, without ever breaking his friendliness, Gennadiy starts assigning Semyon to work with every new patient they have (in the middle of celebration, for which Lobanov actually paid, no less). While not as bad as it could be, Lobanov eventually realises that jerk or not, Bykov is still better as a boss.
  • The Slacker: As Varya is still recovering, Gleb gets tasked to act as her doctor... but decides that he may dump all work on her. Fortunately, she manages to leave her ward and warn Bykov, who punished Gleb... by allowing Varya to decide if Gleb would stay on night shift or not, based on quality of his work.
  • Status Quo Is God: After spending a whole day with Gennadiy, Lobanov realises that he wants to return to Bykov. It is mutual; Bykov wants Lobanov back, without him it's just boring.
