Recap / The Interns S 4 E 8

Go To

Phil suggests to just confront Bykov about his harsh methods and rude behaviour, but only Varya actually supports him (with Gleb and Semyon seemingly agreeing, but abandoning them at the last moment). Bykov agrees to act nicely... but they must deal with their task by themselves, without his help. As for Gleb and Semyon, since they're "fine" with their treatment, he would continue abusing them. But Phil and Varya's attempt to work by themselves almost results in the patient's death from a heart attack (which they didn't recognise in time), only for Bykov to save him, forcing them to admit defeat and acceptg the "rude Bykov" back.

Lyuba receives the parting gift from Lobanov's patient Bobrov (a bottle of cognac), but Semyon thinks that since formally it was him to be Bobvov's doctor (and it doesn't matter that diagnosis and treatment method was suggested by Bykov, and executed by Lyuba — technically, this gift "belongs to Semyon!), so they asks Kupitman to judge. Kupitman gives cognac to Lobanov, agreeing with his arguments... and then reveals that there were also money, which he gives to Lyuba.

Gleb's patient has both arms covered in gypsum and suffers from insomnia, so he asks Gleb for help. Gleb provides him with music player (with calm relaxing music), but then forgets about him; unfortunately, soon the calm music switches to heavy metal, making situation even worse. And because Lobanov decided that it would be fun to try and induce paranoia in him (like classic "you forgot to turn off the iron" trick), Gleb only remembers about the patient by the end of day — and finds that, in desperate attempt to turn music off, he broke the glass with his head.

This episode provides examples of:

  • And I Must Scream: Downplayed. Gleb's patient broke both his arms (making him essentially helpless), and can't even sleep (because something always disrupts him, and sleeping pills don't work). He fears that if this continues, he can go insane. Gleb decides to help him by providing with a player which plays calm, relaxing music... only for it to eventually to switch to heavy metal (which he can't turn off, because of broken limbs), making things even worse. In a desperate attempt to remove it, he breaks the glass with his head.
  • Extreme Doormat: Phil accuses the other interns of being too weak and cowardly to protest Bykov's abusive behaviour, and offers to confront him about this. They seemingly agrees... only for Gleb and Semyon to back off at the last moment. Bykov decides to play along, and start acting nicely towards Phil and Varya... and even more harsh towards Gleb and Semyon, since they "considers everything to be alright". Phil sees it as rather karmic.
  • Gave Up Too Soon: Lampshaded by Lobanov when, despite their expectations, Bykov agrees to Phil's demands instead of showing him who's boss — and continues to mistreat Semyon and Gleb, because they said that they "considers everything to be alright". So, they decides to try and do the same on their own, and see wether it would work for them, too. Ultimately, however, it gets Subverted, as Phil and Varya runs into another problem altogether (not being able to consult with Bykov at all); after witnessing it, Gleb and Semyon decides that screaming Bykov was actually better.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Invoked by Bykov. Phil's plan to ask Bykov to be nicer quickly backfires, because Bykov refuses to help him and Varya with their patient (since if he would talk to them, he may lose control of his temper and start shout insults on them!), so they must deal by themselves... or admit defeat. They chose the first option, but it nearly resulted in their patient dying from a heart attack due to their mistakes, with only Bykov saving him; after this, they accepts his "normal" ruling style.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Since formally Bobrov was Semyon's patient, his parting gift (a bottle of cognac) also belongs to Lobanov, despite it being Bykov who provided a diagnosis and prescribed treatment, and Lyuba who spend two weeks treating him (and Bobrov actually giving this gift directly to her, not Semyon). They asks Kupitman to judge, but he sides with Lobanov... or, rather, he leaves cognac to Semyon, while Lyuba takes the hidden envelope with money. When Lyuba refuses to give him a half of those money as "reward", he just tells Lobanov the truth, but it's too late to do anything, as Lyuba already spent them.
  • Paranoia Gambit: Lobanov decides to induce a paranoia in Gleb, mostly for his amusement. Firstly, he asks wether he forgot to turn off the iron (which may lead to fire), forcing him to run to his apartment to check it. Why? Because Gleb really did forget to turn it off, forcing Lobanov to do it himself, for the third time a week, and this was his little "revenge". He then asks wether he turned off the water. Gleb tells him that he didn't turn it on in the first place... and then Semyon asks him wether he closed the door before leaving, forcing Gleb to run home again. In the end, Semyon reminds him about his patient — by the time when it's indeed too late to fix the situation.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Sure, Bykov may stop yelling on you — but he would also stop consulting you until you give up and accept his standard teaching style. Phil and Varya learns the hard way that it's way too early for them to be able to do without his help.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never learn just how strongly Gleb's patient injured himself in his desperate attempt to turn the music off by striking a glass with his head.
