Recap / The Interns S 4 E 20

Go To

Gleb is extremely afraid of how his life would change with him becoming a father. But he doesn't know what he would tell Varya. Varya, meanwhile, thinks that it would be best to tell him the truth before it comes too far... but can't force herself to do this. Gleb spends the whole day being too scared to talk to Varya, not knowing what he would say to her; Bykov even starts suspecting that he would never make it. Ultimately, he arrives toward the very end, drunk — as he would've never gathered enough courage while sober. Unfortunately, Varya just can't tell him truth by now...

Phil wants for once to deal with his task by himself, without Bykov interfering. Bykov offers him Throshkin — totally insane guy who thinks that he is a secret agent. Throshkin mistakes Phil for American agent sent after him, and ties Phil to the bed. Bykov only unties him when he accepts defeat.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Phil is enraged by Bykov interfering in his interns' work, and he wants to deal with his task by himself for once. Bykov entrust him with Throshkin, a complete lunatic, whom he must treat all by himself. Phil ultimately fails.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Gleb has a nightmare about his future life with Varya (as his wife) and their kid. This scares him enough to start screaming, waking up Lobanov. According to Semyon, this is a fifth time this happened during a single night. He then has another, just after he though that he is already awake and now in the hospital.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Patient Throshkin is totally nuts. His "identity" changes several times a week, always to something crazy, and now he thinks that he is some secret agent of British secret services. Bykov doesn't want to deal with him, so he sends Phil... which leads to Throshkin mistaking Phil for American agent who's after him.
  • Dirty Coward: Bykov is sure that the reason why Gleb doesn't appear yet is because he decided to disappear when he learned about Varya's "pregnancy". In truth, Gleb wasted a whole day, fearing to just come and speak with her, which is not much better, but at least not as jerkish. He only manages to do this when he gets drunk.
  • Dream Within a Dream: Gleb thought that he is already awake and speaks with Semyon in the hospital. Nope, this is another nightmare. Cue him awaking for real, screaming.
  • Fake Pregnancy: Varya decides to tell Gleb the truth about her not being really pregnant, before it comes too far. Unfortunately, she quickly realises that she simply can't do this.
  • Liquid Courage: Gleb only manages to deal with his fear and speak with Varya by getting drunk. Well, try to speak; he is too drunk to talk in any comprehensible way.
  • Pet the Dog: When Bykov realises that Varya is really harmed by Gleb's perceived cowardice, he tries to tell her that even he doesn't consider him really abandoning her, and there must be the other reason for his absence. She thinks that he just tries to comfort her, and Gleb really did this.
  • Secret-Keeper: Varya entrust the secret about her Fake Pregnancy to Lyuba and Bykov.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gleb is so afraid of speaking with Varya, he wastes a whole day hiding, and then decides to just leave at home. Lobanov outright calls him a Dirty Coward, which convinces him to go after all... after getting drunk to suppress his fear.
