Recap / The Interns S 4 E 1

Go To

Bykov is enraged by his on-call room becoming one big dump, and assigns Varya to fix this until the end of a day. Varya, realising that she can't deal with it by herself, asks Lyuba for help. Lyuba, annoyed by the mess she sees, cleans everything up... but Bykov doesn't like the on-call room's new look, and Varya trashes everything to restore status quo, on which angry Lyuba busts her.

Bykov wants to "protect" Alisa from Gleb. He starts with forcing Gleb to check with Kupitman. When he finds out that Gleb is, in fact, infected, he orders him to stay away from Alisa. Unfortunately, now Alisa thinks that Gleb avoids her because she is "ugly", which drives her to tears, forcing Bykov to calm her down. Unknowingly to him, Kupitman faked Gleb's results, to "help" Bykov. But when Bykov learns about this, he decides to continue Kupitman's deception, as it makes Gleb stay away from Alisa.

Lobanov's patient is a black guy... named Misha. Semyon doesn't believe that Misha can be a "true" Russian (despite Misha claiming to being born and raised here), and decides to "prove" that he is "more Russian" than him. Lobanov consistently fails, with Misha actually besting him in all challenges he comes up with, but then he decides to do the one final one — who would outdrink the other. Semyon "wins", while Misha gets sick.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Bykov forces Gleb to check with Kupitman, and when results shows that Gleb, in fact, infected, orders him to stay away from Alisa. Unfortunately, now Alisa thinks that Gleb avoids her because she is "ugly", forcing Bykov to defend Gleb before her just to stop her crying. Later Bykov learns that Kupitman just faked all symptoms to "help" him.
  • Lethally Stupid: Instead of, you know, treating his patient, Lobanov wastes a whole day on "proving" that he is "more Russian" than him. In the end, he challenges Misha on the drinking "duel" (technically, it was another patient's idea, but Semyon agrees with it), and when Misha suffers from severe alcohol poisoning, Lobanov is too busy gloating to notice his condition.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: While Bykov wasn't planning to fake Gleb's test results (he really just wanted to check him), he decides to not reveal to Gleb about what Kupitman did, as it's a good enough (and plausible) excuse to keep Gleb away from Alisa.
  • No True Scotsman: Lobanov's patient is an Afro-Russian guy Misha. Lobanov doesn't believe that a black man can be "true" Russian (despite him speaking without any accent and being native to Moscow), and decides to "prove" that he is "more Russian" than him, in progressively more moronic ways. Firstly, he tries to appeal to his lineage, only to reveal that he barely knows the Russian history (while Misha is a history teacher). Then, he tries to "test" Misha's knowledge of the Russian mentality (which he passes flawlessly, while Semyon struggles with finishing a rhyme he tried to quote). After that, Semyon tries to "test" Misha's knowledge of Russian "mat" (profanities), with Misha beating him once again. When everything else fails, Lobanov, following another patient's advice, challenges Misha for a drinking competition. That one, Semyon "wins"... because Misha suffers from alcohol poisoning.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Kupitman mistakes Bykov's request to "check" Gleb for request to sabotage his relationship with Alisa, and fakes his analyses. Kupitman later lampshades this, when Bykov asks him why he decided to do this, and tells him that he is venereologist, not telepath. Though Bykov decides to play along with this, seeing it as a simple way to keep Gleb way from Alisa.
  • Trash of the Titans: Varya must deal with on-call room becoming one big dump, and has only one day for it. Realising that her chances are slim, she asks Lyuba for help. When Lyuba sees this, she tells Varya that it would be easier to just burn it all down, and rebuilt from scratch, but decides to help anyway. Unfortunately, she also decides to redecorate on-call room, which enrages Bykov when he finds out (he's of those people who hates any interior changes), and now Varya must return it to its default state. Varya interprets this as an order to make a mess again, and gets busted during trashing the room by Lyuba, who gets angry at her.
