Recap / The Interns S 12 E 2

Kisegach gives Bykov a container with her self-prepared food to take on the work, but he thinks that it's humiliating, like he's "henpecked". It doesn't convince Kisegach, who forces him to bring it anyway. Just as Bykov expected, Kupitman immediately starts mocking him, calling him "henpecked". Angry Bykov rushes to on-call room to just utilise the stew, but Alexei asks whether he may take it instead; Bykov agrees. But Kisegach then busts Alexei with Bykov's food; when she realises where he obtained it, she confronts Bykov, calling him out on blatantly disrespecting her attempts to please him with home-made food. Bykov defuses the situation by lying that he only gave it to Alexei since he was very hungry, and Bykov took pity on him. But Kisegach prepares another pack for Bykov — just in presence of Kupitman, who already foretastes the opportunity to continue trolling Bykov. Bykov decides to throw it away after all, but gets busted in-act by Kisegach, who feels so offended, she can only run away silently. Bykov (unsuccessfully) tries to defend his position by stating that packed food would damage his (and potentially her) authority, so home-made food should be saved for home, but all he achieves is her refusing to cook for him at all. When Bykov goes back, he sees that Kupitman is eating the food prepared by Kisegach, stating that when you eat the food prepared for you, it's shameful, but when you eat someone else's food, it's "spoils of war". Later, both Alexei and Kupitman falls sick with food poisoning, which Bykov witnesses. At home, Kisegach tries to give Bykov a third portion of her stew (now without any plastic container), but Bykov distracts her and throws it away. When she busts him, he reveals that the stew is dangerously bad, and he just protected them both.

After Phil's attempts to exercise goes horribly wrong, he gets saved by the orderly Pasha. Phil now thinks that he is in great debt to him, despite Pasha's insistence that there's nothing special. Phil tries to befriend Pasha, feeling grateful for Pasha saving his life, by always sticking around wherever he goes. He even allows him to visit him at any time he wants. Pasha actually takes that offer, and starts visiting Phil "as a friend", more and more often, sometimes even during work, which quickly becomes uncomfortable for Phil himself. Lyuba tells Phil that he made a mistake by allowing Pasha so much, and now only way to deal with him is outright order him to stay away. But Phil isn't harsh enough, and fails to do it. Phil then invites Pasha to play video games, but now Gleb feels angry at him for inviting Pasha to their house without warning anyone. Gleb does what Phil failed to: orders Pasha to leave them alone. Phil worries that Gleb's words seriously offended Pasha, and calls him to comfort him — in the middle of the night, no less. The next day, Pasha tells Lyuba that he feels just as tired of this "friendship" as Phil — and can't say so, for exactly the same reason!

Sophia thinks that Gleb just admitted that he loves her, but Rita thinks that it "doesn't count", since he did it during sex, and thus with not clear enough mind. It would only matter if he would repeat this while completely sober and straight-thinking. Sophia decides to straight up ask Gleb whether he was serious about saying it — but never specifies about what, so he interprets it as her asking him about entirely different situation — when he (jokingly) called her "bitch". Since Gleb doesn't bother to ask her to specify, either, Sophia interprets it as an answer to her actual question, and gets offended for real. Now, she thinks that Gleb is an asshole, for "joking" that he loves her. Sophia, in turn, starts demonstratively avoiding him under any excuse. When Gleb angrily calls her out on this, she orders him to repeat "that" again, this time seriously. Still thinking that she's referring to him calling her "bitch", Gleb says exactly that, and gets surprised when she reacts badly. After learning from Rita why exactly Sophia acts this way, Gleb tells her that he loves her, and even prepares a romantic dinner for her. But then Sophia kills the mood by refusing to say the same in turn, stating that she's "not ready". But at night, Gleb receives a call from (clearly drunk) Sophia, who says that she loves him in turn. Gleb doesn't miss an opportunity to sting her by pointing that "it doesn't count when you're drunk; repeat it tomorrow, sober".

This episode provides examples of:

  • Blatant Lies: Phil tries to insist that this barbell is perfectly okay for him. While obviously barely holding it in one place, let alone actually exercising. When guy who asked him leaves, Phil immediately drops it on his chest, trapping himself and restricting his ability to breath; fortunately for him, the orderly Pasha was nearby, and heard Phil screaming for help.
  • Brutal Honesty: Lyuba thinks that this is only way to deal with Pasha: simply tell him to leave Phil alone. He wouldn't even be offended, since he is just that simple-minded. Phil is too nice and soft to do this, but fortunately, Gleb later does this for him — after which it turns out that Pasha feels the same way about Phil. This almost works, but Phil botches it because he feels remorse and apologises before Pasha, giving them both no option to end their "friendship" and save face.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Since Lyuba has told her that "I love you" only matters when said on clear mind (not during sex), Sophia asks Gleb whether he was serious (without specifying what she means); Gleb, thinking that she's talking about completely different episode, says that it was a joke — which seriously offends Sophia, as only a complete asshole would make mock love confession!
  • Henpecked Husband: Bykov believes that only pathetic, obedient "husbands" would bring packed food from their wives on their work, and tries to use it as excuse to not bring Kisegach's stew to the hospital. Kisegach doesn't accept this argument, and forces him anyway. Then Kupitman sees him with that, and starts mocking. Ultimately, he gets rid of it by giving it to Alexei who asked whether he can take it then.
  • Karmic Misfire: Karma strikes at Kupitman by giving him food poisoning from the food he stole... but besides him, Alexei, who was given that food voluntarily, also gets poisoned, just because.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Kupitman spends a whole episode mocking Bykov for allegedly being Henpecked Husband... all so he can steal Bykov's food for himself; apparently, it's only "shameful" when it's made by your wife, when you take away someone else's food, it's "spoils of war". It bites him in the ass when it turns out that the food was of not exactly good quality, and he receives food poisoning. Well, he and Alexei, who ate another portion earlier.
  • Lethal Chef: It's unclear what exactly caused this (whether bad quality of products, or her lack of skills), but Kisegach's stew is bad enough to cause serious food poisoning. Bykov outright compares it to biological weapon.
  • Never My Fault: After he receives a food poisoning from food he stole from Bykov, Kupitman blames.. Bykov, for giving him poisoned food on purpose as part of his prank (which Kupitman considers to be "childish").
  • No Ending: Phil's plot about "friendship" with Pasha remains unresolved by the end of the episode. However, it wouldn't ever be mentioned again afterwards.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • Sophia asks Gleb whether he was serious in what he said yesterday; she means him saying that he loves her, but does not specify this. Gleb remembers entirely different phrase he also said yesterday, when he (jokingly) called her "bitch", and of course interprets her question as her being accidentally offended by him, so he apologises, stating that this was a bad joke — again, without stating for which phrase he apologises. This eventually leads to her demanding him saying "this" for real, so Gleb naturally calls her "bitch" and once again gets surprised by her reacting badly. Fortunately, Rita later explains the situation to Gleb.
    • Neither Phil nor Pasha can just say that they're tired and don't want to continue this "friendship", fearing that other one would be offended if they do. Gleb seemingly resolves the issue by kicking Pasha out, but Phil then accidentally "restarts" it by trying to apologise.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": When Kupitman tries to continue his torrent of "Henpecked Husband" jokes for a third time, Bykov rudely tells him to not even dare. Kupitman jokingly "zips up" his mouth.
  • Refuge in Audacity: After being caught throwing away that stew, Bykov only tells Kisegach that "it would be impossible to eat everything, anyway". Naturally, it doesn't work.
  • Taking Advantage of Generosity: Phil, thinking that he should "reward" Pasha for saving him, allows him to visit himself whenever Pasha wants. This quickly goes too far for Phil's comfort, with Pasha visiting him more and more often, sometimes even during work. It gets Subverted later, when it turns out that Pasha himself sticks around with Phil for exactly the same reason — to not offend Phil; otherwise, he's just as tired of their "friendship" as Phil.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Sure, Phil, try that obviously too heavy for you barbell while alone. When he predictably drops it on himself, he only gets saved because Pasha was close enough to hear him screaming for help.
  • Troll: Kupitman spends majority of the episode mocking Bykov for being "Henpecked Husband", due to him accepting packed food from Kisegach. When Bykov receives a second pack (in Kupitman's presence), and tries to refuse it, Kupitman pretends to side with Kisegach to press Bykov into compliance to not look like a jerk, only to continue mocking him after Kisegach leaves. However, the last laugh is Bykov's.
