Tropes

  • Call-Back:
    • The playwright turns out to be Alan North, the guy they fired for drug possession, setting the precedent for firing Maia for the same reason.
    • Kovac from season two shows up. Diane decides to represent him in court.
  • Exact Words: The playwright says the characters are based on real people, not that they're inspired by them. This is Liz's way in.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: A guy tells Marissa a joke about a zoo that only had a dog; it was a shih tzu. She finds it to be a bad joke.
  • Photographic Memory: Liz's second chair claims to have this.
  • Refuge in Audacity: The lawyer they ask about Memo 618 tells Diane the memo is regarding her ass.
  • Show Within a Show: "C*cksucker in Chains" is a play that borrows liberally from the writer's experiences at Reddick-Boseman.
