Go To

"Old Boyfriends" is an episode in the seventh season of The Golden Girls.

Sophia seeks a "swinging senior" through the personals column. Rose can't recall an old beau named Thor when she meets him again.

Tropes:

  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: The man Sophia finds via the personals column and goes on dates with never gets physical with her, much to Sophia's frustration. It turns out that the reason for this is the woman who always accompanies him on dates is actually his wife, not his sister as they claimed.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Dorothy makes one such comment after Rose reveals that she had 56 boyfriends back in her high school days.
Blanche: If that were true, Rose, then that would mean you were... a slut.
Dorothy: Oh, come on, Blanche, how can you say that? So the woman had fifty-six boyfriends in one year. She's not a slut.
    Rose: Thank you, Dorothy.
    Dorothy: She is the slut.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: The wife of the man Sophia finds through the personals column wishes for her husband to find new love after she passes away because she's dying, but it turns out that he doesn't want to do it and agreed to her idea only to make her happy, much to her shock when it's revealed late in the episode.
  • News Travels Fast: After Rose reveals she had 56 boyfriends in high school, Sophia walks into the room looking for advice on men and immediately goes to her instead of Blanche.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Rose realizes after her memory about Thor is unlocked that she kissed Thor only to make Charlie jealous.
  • Relatively Flimsy Excuse: The man Sophia finds and goes on dates with is always accompanied by a woman who claims to be the man's sister. When Sophia decides to take initiative on the man when they're alone due to him never getting physical with her later in the episode, he blurts out in the moment of nervousness that he's still married, leading to him having to confess that the woman who's been accompanying him is actually his wife.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: The wife of the man Sophia has been going on dates with turns out to be dying. As they confess to Dorothy and Sophia after the secret's out, this is why she has been closely chaperoning any woman he's been paired on dates with the whole time, in the hope that he'll find another woman to replace her once she passes on.
